Ring Minutes

I.B.M. Ring #258

Meeting Minutes – Thursday, June 25, 2009

We tried a new, temporary location this month, Angelo's Italian Restaurant, just off SR 441, in Tavares.  It was closer for some members and a little further for others.  The food and service were good, but the size of the room was not much larger than other places we have been and the noise from the main dining room remains a problem.  We will go back to Denny's, in Leesburg, for next month's meeting, and until we find a new permanent home.

President Magic Ian opened the meeting at 7:14.  The secretary's minutes were accepted as e-mailed and corrected.  The treasurer's report showed a healthy balance of $8,000.26, at the end of May, which included the proceeds from "The Villages" show performed in April, with a membership of 47 magi.

Guests introduced were Aaron Solomon (son of Greg "Simon"), Matt Owen (nephew of Bob Morris) and Brad Weller (brother of Bryan Weller and also an all around circus performer.)

Old Business

Roger Reid reminded everyone of the "Teach-In" at Camp Boggy Creek, scheduled for Sunday, August 9, from 3:00 to 6:00 PM.  We will be working with campers who are dealing with epilepsy.  We will perform simple magical effects for those campers who have expressed an interest, then teach the campers to perform the effects and give them the necessary props to take home.  To date the "teachers" who have volunteered are Wally Libenson, Greg Solomon, Jim Forsythe and Santa will record the event with his excellent photography.  We could use one or two more "teachers" for this event.  Contact Roger at bonzo1114a@aol.com, or 321-945-7500, for more details and/or to volunteer.

The "Hawthorne Show", another club fund raiser, is scheduled for Sunday, October 25 at 3:00 PM.  There will be only one performance that afternoon.  We still need volunteers to perform in the stage show, as well as workers for "back stage" and "close-up lobby magicians".  Contact Jim Moody at crowdteaser@embarqmail.com or 352-315-1100 for more details and/or to volunteer.

There was a discussion concerning the fact that some venues are now requiring insurance to be carried by performers or they will not be able to work.  (For future reference, insurance is available through the I.B.M and the Hampson, Mowrer, Kreitz Insurance Agency.  A $1,000,000 "Commercial General Liability Policy" is available for as little as $111 per year.  Premiums are based on gross receipts from performing.  The policy begins for all on August 15 and runs through the same date the following year.  See the I.B.M. web site and/or the latest issue of the Linking Ring, for more details. - Secretary)

New Business

Greg Solomon advises that Darren Romeo, "The Voice of Magic" and protégée of Siegfried and Roy, will be performing at Busch Gardens in Tampa all summer.  He has been in touch with Darren who would be glad to arrange for V.I.P. seating for Ring 258 if we want to attend a performance as a group.  Contact Greg Solomon at themagicexperience@yahoo.com or 352-369-0099 to form a group to go!

Wallace Murphy, member of Ring 170, who recently appeared in articles and on the cover of "The Linking Ring", will do a lecture at the home of Chris Dunn this coming Tuesday, June 30.  The lecture will cover cards, coins, sponge balls and other close up material.  Contact Chris Dunn quickly, at youngdunns@yahoo.com or 407-808-5146, as seating is very limited!

Potential lectures for Ring 258 are Simon Lovell in August (on the "blue" side) and Levent on Friday, October 16.  Ring 170 will host John Armstrong on August 4 and Jim Pace sometime in September.

The dates and locations of these lectures have yet to be confirmed.

The annual Ring 258 Picnic will take place on Sunday, July 12 at Bryan Weller's new auction house located at 204 S. Main St.9 (SR 301), Bushnell, FL 33513.  (Yes, it's air conditioned!)  The club is providing hamburgers, hot dogs, brats, etc.  Each member is bringing a side dish.  There will be "games, prizes and surprises" for everyone.  Rich Hewitt will return as chef supreme.  The event will also include a "Magic Rummage Sale", so empty your closets of that "stuff" you no longer use, which might go right in to someone else's act!

Ring members Bill and Anna Marie Fay were featured in "Healthy Living" magazine with an article about their founding of "Alzheimer's Helpers, Inc."

Jim Moody discussed and recommended the movie "Shade", in which Hal Holbrook does a dead on portrayal of Dai Vernon.  Sylvester Stallone also stars in the movie.

Greg Solomon brought up the possibility of doing a fund raiser with five Ocala Rotary groups at a theatre in the area.  He will investigate further and report back.

Magic Ian will be lecturing in Colon, Michigan, at "Abbot's Get Together" the first week of August.

The 50/50 raffle was won by Bob Morris and then the meeting was adjourned.

The theme of the after meeting entertainment was "Ventriloquism", a little unusual for a club mostly involved in magic.  Five members were brave enough to take the stage.

Magic Ian emceed and was first to perform.  He used "Darlene the Duck" (Jo-Ann) as his partner in crime.  With the aid of Aaron Solomon, a card was chosen, there was a brief discussion between Ian and Darlene and then the chosen card was "plucked" from the deck, as was the rest of the deck!

Tom "Stash" Golabeck appeared as the "Masked Ventriloquist".  He got angry at his "dummy", which refused to talk, and he left the stage.

Roger "Foo Ling Yu" Reid briefly reminded the Ring of great ventriloquists of the past and present such as Edgar Bergen, Paul Winchell, Shari Lewis and Jeff Dunham.  He then did them all "one better" by becoming a true "VENT-triloquist", using the cover of an air conditioning vent as his partner.

Jim "Crowd Teaser" Moody had his lady bird friend, "Miss Clair Voyant", find selected cards numbers and letters.

And the finale of the show was Bryan Weller who brought out his friend "Leroy"!

Magic Ian gave a short "demo" on how to do "substitution of sounds" to make ventriloquism work.  Jim Moody related some "vent" stories about Jimmy Nelson using 10 audience members as "dummies", when his luggage containing his vent figure went astray, and the Unknown Comic coming on stage to find the entire audience with paper bags on their heads!

To close the evening, Magic Ian did a few patriotic magic effects including torn and restored flag napkin and silk "Blendo" to a silver cane with an American flag on it!

     Respectfully submitted,

          Roger L. Reid, Secretary

    May Meeting Minutes

    IBM Ring #258

    Meeting Minutes – Thursday, May 28, 2009

Ring President Magic Ian opened the meeting at 7:15 PM at our temporary (now permanent?) meeting place, Denny's on Hwy 441/27 in Leesburg. Guests were Dan Halpin, who joined both the International and the Ring this evening, Richard Seitz from Seattle and Josh Gair from Orlando.

The Secretary's minutes were approved as e-mailed and posted on the Ring 258 website. The treasurer's report, also approved, showed a balance of $3906.75 at the end of April, including the expenses from "The Villages" show, but not the income. Ring membership stands at 47, including 5 who have outstanding dues payments and may be deleted from the roster.

    Old Business

"The Villages" show produced a check of approximately $4300. But the net from the show was closer to $1800. This opposed to over $8000 the first year we performed there. Much of the difference was due to the number and size of the fees we were assessed by the Savannah Center which have grown every year. (Some of which may need to be reviewed further.) Discussion ensued as to how to raise our net. Ideas were: 1. Try to eliminate some of the fees by having more Ring members involved doing more of the work ourselves. 2. Produce the show without outside paid talent. 3. To Employ Art Thomas and crew to provide sound, lighting and staging of the show. 4. Have Ring members do more promotional work in order to fill more seats. 5. Try to get a prime Friday or Saturday date to raise attendance. 6. Put more emphasis on the performers in the lobby. A "Show Committee" needs to be formed now, to begin to organize the show for next year. Contact Magic Ian @ MagicianS@aol.com and let him know if you would like to be on the organizing committee and/or how you would like to participate. Every member of the Ring should be taking part in the largest Ring 258 fund raising event of the year.

Ring Secretary Roger Reid was in touch with Camp Boggy Creek Entertainment Coordinator Marshall Toy in reference to our next "teach in". He offered us a number of dates to choose from. Sunday, August 9th was chosen at the meeting. We will be there from 3:00 to 6:00 PM, performing and teaching magic. Contact Roger at bonzo1114a@aol.com if you would like to be one of the "teachers" going to Boggy Creek. A motion was approved to donate $500 to Camp Boggy Creek again this year.

Magic Ian asked that the Ring revisit his request for a donation to the Lake Sumter Hospice which was extremely helpful during his daughter's illness and passing. A donation of $250 was approved.

    New Business

Greg Solomon reports that Ring 258 ½ will be on hiatus for the summer due to lack of interest. Hopefully it will start up again in the fall with the beginning of the new school year.

Ed Moravetz is teaching magic classes at The Villages University.

Greg also reports that U.S. Playing Card is no longer printing "gimmicked cards". (No such thing! No way!) Some dealers are passing off poor quality cards as substitutes. Haines House of Cards may be the last refuge of quality cards for magicians.

Stash Golabeck requested that meeting themes be chosen in advance so that everyone has a chance to prepare to perform. Next month's theme will be "Ventriloquism".

The idea of adding an "auction and flea market", open to all, at the Ring's summer Picnic was discussed and turned down. But a "Members Only Rummage Sale" of magic was approved. Our Picnic will be held on Sunday, July 12 and will take place at Brian Weller's "Big Top Auctions", 204 S. Main Street, (US 301), Bushnell, FL 33513. The Ring will provide hot dogs, hamburgers, "brats" and rolls. Bring your own drinks and at least one side dish. If you were not at the May meeting and expect to attend the Picnic contact Picnic Chairman Jim Moody to tell him what you will be bringing at crowdteaser@embarqmail.com . There will be games, prizes and surprises galore! Rich Hewitt will return as chef extraordinaire!

Ring member Donald Pierson will graduate from high school on June 4th. His mom has secretly invited Ring members to an open house on Sunday, June 7th, from 1:00 to 5:00 PM, to surprise Donald. The address is 5834 W. Pine Circle, Crystal River, FL 34429. Bring some "magic".

John Calvert is in the hospital, in Massachusetts, recovering from a minor stroke and fall. A mailing address for "get well cards" will be e-mailed to Ring members as soon as the information is available.

Daytona Magic's Convention will be held Nov. 6 – 8. Featured performers include Harry Anderson and The Pendragons.

Chuck Smith has DVD's, of this year's Villages Show, including John Calvert's performance, available for $10. Contact Chuck for a copy at craxytoo@yahoo.com.

Wallace Murphy, featured in the February issue of The Linking Ring, will lecture at the home of Chris Dunn on Tuesday evening, June 30. Contact Chris at youngdunns@yahoo.com to make reservations. Seating is limited. Also scheduled, later in the summer, Magic Ian will do a rope teach in.

Keep an eye out for the June issue of The Linking Ring! Ring President Magic Ian (One Man Parade), John Calvert and Ring 258 will all be featured in this issue.

Magic Ian will be lecturing at "Abbot's Magic Get Together", in Colon, Michigan, August 5 – 8, 2009.

This year's Hawthorne fund raising show will be on Sunday, October 25th as part of Magic Week. It will be a 90 minute matinee with no intermission. Those who wish to be on the bill, perform close-up in the lobby or work back stage should contact Jim Moody at crowdteaser@embarqmail.com.

David and Karen Lyons will be moving back to Pennsylvania this month. They graciously donated a number of effects to be raffled off and videos to the club library. We will miss you!

The 50/50 was won by Santa in the amount of $26. Then the meeting was adjourned.

The theme for the entertainment portion of the evening was "Table to Table Magic", MC'd by Roger Reid. First to perform was David Lyons, who did a series of penetrations, with a block, a ring and a needle, a needle through a solid block of brass in a match box and finally with rubber bands.

Stash, the Cab Driver, performed a story told entirely by the deck of cards he was handling. He received quite a few $2 tips!

Lee Langer made sponge bunnies multiply in the hands of Dandy Dan Dyer.

Jim Moody, "The Crowd Teaser", got us with "A Card Called Ralph" and "The Blushing Card".

Wally Libenson was able to find the selected card simply by counting to it!

Greg Solomon entertained with "Jumping Rubber Bands" which turned into a "Hippo" and followed with a beautiful ring and rope routine.

And President Magic Ian closed the show with "MIKO" (a 3 ½ of Clubs?) forced from an electric deck and his very own "Pepsilkola" (silk in a mini pepsi bottle).

    Respectfully submitted,

    Roger L. Reid

    Ring Minutes

    IBM Ring #258

    Meeting Minutes – April 23, 2009

President Magic Ian opened the meeting at 7:15 PM at our temporary location, Denny's, on Hwy. 27/441 in Leesburg.  We had one guest, Mr. Harry Solomon, father of Greg Solomon.

The Secretary's minutes of the March meeting were accepted as e-mailed and posted on the Ring website.  The Treasurer's report, read by Jim Moody in the absence of George Smallwood, showed a healthy balance of $7000.75 at the end of March and magical membership of 47, was also approved.

Old Business – There was a lively discussion on the topic of a permanent place to meet.  Suggestions ran from "Stay here at Denny's" to "Angelo's Italian Restaurant on 441" to "Let's buy a building and have a clubhouse".    Ian appointed a "Search Committee" consisting of Brian Weller, Frank Martin, Jim Moody and himself to make a recommendation to the Ring for a permanent location.

The Ring Library was brought up.  There are more than 60 books, tapes and DVD's in the library.  Contact George Shield if you want to review the list and borrow from the library.

New Business – Chuck Smith and Son video taped the first of the two shows at The Villages.  They were voted an honorarium of $100 to help defray their costs.  The DVD video will be available at a cost of $10 to members.  An honorarium of $100 (CASH) was also approved to thank Santa for his ongoing photo record of the Ring, its members and their magic.

The Calvert Lecture was excellent!  He lectured on most of the things that he performed in the Show.  Ian was disappointed in the attendance by members of the Ring, especially since it was FREE!  Ian worked with Mr. Calvert for almost 3 hours to set up the lecture.  Jim Moody was roped into learning all the musical cues and thus repeated them for the two Villages shows.  Mr. Calvert had mostly memorabilia for sale after the lecture.

The Villages Shows were a financial and theatrical success again.  We will not have a complete financial report for a few weeks yet.  The first show went long, so changes were made to the 2nd show.  Bev Bergeron was less than perfect as an M.C.  Mr. Calvert WAS perfect.  Discussion was held on using the talents of Ring members for everything next year.  There was also discussion concerning the use of Art Thomas and group from Ring 170 to do the "tech work" next year.  Close-up workers did a fine job, though there was no video or photo's taken this year.  Suggestion was made to add them to the program and advertising for more recognition.  The Show received a nice write up in the Village Sun on Saturday.  An article and accompanying photo's was sent to Sammy Smith for inclusion in the Linking Ring.

Jim Moody brought up the Ring Picnic to be held in June or July.  Brian Weller offered his new auction house as the location.  Jim will put together a plan and present it at the May meeting.

Jim also brought up the annual Ring Auction & Lecture.  He suggested that we hold it in October, six months distant from Ring 170's auction.  Another committee will report next month on the subject.

Ian has made the entire archives of the Ring digital.  He asks that anyone who has additional information to please send it to him for inclusion in the archives, as a PDF file.

The 50/50 raffle was won by Chuck Smith in the amount of $21 and we adjourned.

Lee Langer M.C.'d the entertainment portion of the evening.

First up, Tom Golabeck performed as three different personalities: Aldo Colombini did a version of "3 Card Monte, Tom did "2 Card Monte" and Stash had a card reappear at any location Santa selected.

Jack Palumbo did his version of the "Old 3 Shell Game" and wowed everyone when the pea completely vanished!

Greg Solomon used the "Pin Wheel Illusion" to grow and shrink his head.  Greg, did it hurt?

Chuck Smith performed a nice "Coins Across" routine with 4 borrowed silver dollars.

Lee Langer displayed a double paddle routine where the image jumped from one paddle to the other.

And President Magic Ian closed the show with his beautiful "Dances With Ropes" routine, moving from "Professors Nightmare" to "Linking Ropes" and back again, all with totally unprepared ropes!

Watch for Magic Ian to be featured in the June, Linking Ring "Parade".

         Respectfully Submitted,

Roger L. Reid, Secretary, Ring 258

    Magic Club Meeting Ring 258

    Meeting at New Location
The Leesburg Lake County Magic club Ring 258 will have our meeting April 23rd, at 7 PM at DENNY's Restaurant, not far from the old location.

    DENNY"S LINK CLICK HERE

The meeting will feature hi-lites and discussion of the John Calvert lecture and club show event. We hope to have some photos and maybe some video available. The new location does not have TV like the old place, so we may run some things on a laptop.

The additional agenda will be somewhat what we wanted to do last meeting, we would like some of the close-up workers to bring their act that they did at the event.

We will not have a final tally on the show results until a few weeks from now, but we estimate we had over 1000 attendees between the two shows.

Thanks again to all those who supported this annual event by attending and especially those who did backstage, close-up and performances.

Special thanks to Bev Bergeron for his fun emcee work, Craig Fennessy and Santa for photography.
    -Ian
