November Minutes

Meeting Minutes

IBM Ring #258 – Sunday, November 22, 2009

Since our regular meeting date falls on Thanksgiving, and we also had a lecture scheduled for Sunday, Nov. 22, our monthly meeting was held prior to the lecture.  We had low attendance at the meeting (18 of 48 members) even though there was a FREE lecture immediately following.

President Magic Ian opened the meeting at 12:35 PM.  The Secretary's minutes were approved as E-mailed.  Treasurer George Smallwood was not in attendance but sent his report, which was read into the minutes by the Secretary.  The Ring has a balance of $7245.12 as of the end of October, with a few dollars still owed to the Ring from the Hawthorne show.

     Old Business

President Elect Frank Martin brought up the continuing search for a permanent meeting place.  A number of locations were discussed…again.  Among them various restaurants, locations in The Villages and our former meeting place "The Youth Center".   After some discussion it was decided to try the Youth Center for the January meeting and see if it meets the approval of the membership.  Signage and lighting may need to be added to help members find the place.  If anyone has a suggestion for another meeting place please contact Frank at frank@frankmartinmagic.com or 352-274-3243.

The Hawthorne Show produced a profit to the Ring of between $400 and $500.  An exact accounting will be forthcoming from the treasurer.  Bill and Anna Marie Fay sold a bunch of tickets!  There were many positive comments about the show.

Roger Reid brought up an issue which was overlooked at the election last month.  Some of the officers elected are not members of "the international", which precludes them from holding officer positions.  According to all concerned this will be remedied before they are installed.

     New Business

The passing of Chris Dunn's mother was noted. The Secretary was asked to send a card.

Our latest visit to Camp Boggy Creek was chronicled on pages 38 & 39 of the November Linking Ring.

Jim Moody brought up an issue with e-mail messages.  Some members are not receiving Ring e-mails from the President.  Magic Ian explained that he has more than one e-mail list for people in magic and may have chosen the wrong one when sending the lecture reminder e-mail.  He also explained that if you don't have a sender's e-mail address in your "address book", your spam software may delete the message.  You should include e-mail addresses for both the current Ring President and Secretary in your address book and update after the installation of new officers in January.

There are currently 32 people signed up for the "Holiday Party".  It is FREE to members and $20 for guests to attend.  There will be lots of food, prizes and surprises.  Bring a gift valued at around $15 for the gift exchange.  If you don't know what to bring, contact any of the Ring "dealers", Magic Ian, Dandy Dan, Allen Konstan or Roger Reid who can provide you with magical gifts.   If you have not already done so, contact Committee Chairman Jim Moody at crowdteaser@embarqmail.com or 352-315-1100, prior to the December 1 cut off date, to sign up for the Holiday Party.

Ed Seitz has had a stroke, but is doing well.  The Secretary was directed to send a "get well card".

Greg Solomon gave a short review of the Daytona Magic/Florida Magicians Assn. convention.  His review was "somewhat" slanted due to being assaulted by the father of another youth competitor in the contest.  Chris Capehart was "great".  Charlotte Pendragon's show was poor and her lecture was "close to incoherent".  People walked out of both.

The 50/50 raffle, which helps fund our "Holiday Party", was won by Santa in the amount of $8.00!

The meeting was adjourned at 1:25 in order to aid Devin Knight in setting up for his lecture, which followed at 2:00 PM.  Devin lectured on both Comedy Magic and Comedy Mentalism.  He showed a wide variety of effects including a salt vanish to a light bulb, a new way to use a Svengali Deck, some beautiful card sleights, "non card trick card tricks", etc.  He had many things for sale at bargain prices, but he also explained how to make many of the effects at home.  The lecturer was very well received.

Respectfully submitted, Roger L. Reid, Secretary

Ring 258 Minutes

Meeting Minutes

I.B.M. Ring #258 – Thursday, October 22, 2009

The meeting was held in a small room at the Perkins Restaurant on Hwy 27 near Hawthorne, due to our never ending search for a new permanent location.  This room did not fit the bill either.  President Magic Ian brought the meeting to order, a little later than usual, at 7:26 as members were still finishing their meals.  Guests were: Lyle Richard (former member), Pat Maxwell and Ed McGowan.

The secretary's minutes were approved as e-mailed.  There was a question concerning things printed in the minutes and how things are actually being done.  It was noted that the "mentalist" lecture by Devin Knight was voted down last month, yet now appears on our schedule to take place on Sunday, Nov. 22.  President Magic Ian explained that due to additional information and time constraints he made an executive decision to book the lecture.  The Treasurers report was approved showing a balance of $6974.18, as of 9/30/09 and membership of 47 Magi.

Old Business - The lecture bookings for November were brought up again.  Nathan Kranzo was to have been in January.  Ian explained that the January date had already been taken by the time we contacted him, but since we had approved this lecture last month he chose to book him for Wed., Nov. 4, or we would lose the lecture entirely.   Both lectures noted above will take place at the Howard Johnson's, 20329 RT. 27, Clermont, FL 34715.

There was also extended discussion of our meeting location again.  Numerous places were brought up and recommended, Golden Corral @ the Villages among them.   Golden Corral has a hard minimum of thirty diners and $15 minimum per plate.   Allan Konstan re-introduced the idea of using "The Retreat" camp that we met at a few years ago.  There are a number of restaurants within a mile of there where members could meet for dinner before the meeting.  A final recommendation from the "Meeting Location Committee" will come before the end of the year.  Out of necessity, the November meeting will take place an hour and a half prior to the Nov. 22 lecture, as our regular meeting night falls on Thanksgiving.  Our December meeting will take place at the Holiday Party on Sunday, Dec. 27, at Royal Highlands, as our regular meeting night falls on Christmas Eve.

Tickets for the Hawthorne show, coming up this Sunday afternoon at 3:00 PM were offered for sale. All members were again asked to participate on stage, back stage, doing close-up or acting as ushers and distributors of programs.  Those working are entitled to 1 "freebie" ticket.

New Business – Frank Martin brought up what seems to be a lack of adherence to the rules and votes taken.  He asked that "Roberts Rules of Order" be used during the formal part of the meetings and that decisions made by vote of the membership be enforced.  President Ian rebutted that sometimes there are extenuating circumstances that make changes necessary.  It was recommended that the club go to a Board of Directors format with current officers and 3 past presidents making up that Board.  That was tabled for the new slate of officers to decide on.

The "Goals" of the club also came into question.  George Smallwood read the written goals from our corporate papers in to the record.  (Ask George for a copy if you have not seen or heard them.)  The reading seemed to satisfy all parties.

George also suggested that the Officers and/or Executive Board take a lesson from Ring 170 and meet prior to the general meeting of the Ring.   Decisions made there would help move the Ring Business meeting along and leave more time for magic.

There was some discussion of "bickering" between members that had been going on for some time and the President overstepping his bounds on occasion.

Elections for the officers of Ring 258, for the calendar year 2010, were held.  The new officers are: President – Frank Martin, Vice President - Bryan Weller, Secretary – Ian Sutz and Treasurer – George Smallwood.  President elect Martin appointed George Shield to be Sergeant at Arms.  The new officers will assume office as of January 1, 2010.

The 50/50 Raffle was won by Anna Marie Faye in the amount of $7.  And the meeting was adjourned.

The after meeting entertainment, with dual themes of "Spooky Magic" and "Trick Decks" was MC'd by Magic Ian.  Since this was not a "show and tell" night, effects were performed and not explained.

Magic Ian performed first using two trick decks performing "The Haunted Pack" and "Brain Wave" combining them into a nice routine.

Wally Libenson named cards "Lucy" and "Leah" before they were even chosen.

Jack Palumbo used a deck of cards with 52 different backs to do "Rainbow Miracle".

Greg Solomon showed us "Knot a Card Trick" and "Flash Cards".

Bryan Weller used his band saw and then performed "Split Deck".

Roger Reid created the routine "Laser Card" out of a jumbo deck of cards, a ray gun and "Deely Boppers".  The "alien assistant" from the audience shot a hole through the chosen card with the laser gun.  Roger also showed a spooky magic "square circle" effect created using a plastic pumpkin and a tube that looked like a castle.

Dandy Dan Dyer used a brightly colored sun and moon hank to display "The Haunted Hank".

George Smallwood began an effect, but retired back to his seat, when the "audience assistant" cut too many cards.  Oops.

And Ring President Elect, Frank Martin, closed the evening's festivities with a "true story" about the "Tokoloshi" spirits in Africa and how they affected his "Haunted Match Box".

     Respectfully Submitted,

          Roger L. Reid

Ring 258 September Minutes

Meeting Minutes

I.B.M. Ring #258 – September 24, 2009

The meeting was called to order by President Magic Ian, at 7:00 PM, back at our temporary location, Denny's, on Hwy 27 in Leesburg.  Last month's location, at Congregation Sinai, in Minneola, came with some complications, so we're back on the hunt for a permanent place again!  Thanks to Lee Langer for trying to get us a permanent home.

We had two guests this evening, Brad Weller, brother of Brian, and Dan Stapleton, Ring 170 member and President of the Florida Association of Magicians.

The Secretary's minutes were accepted as e-mailed and posted on the ring web site, which can be found at http://ring258.blogspot.com/.  The Treasurer's report, also accepted, showed an end of August balance of $7138.90 and membership of 47 Magi.

Old Business

Due to our change in meeting venue we will need another location for our "Flea Market-Lecture-Auction", scheduled for Sunday, October 18.  Ian has narrowed it down to either the Day's Inn or the Howard Johnson's at the Rt. 27 exit from the Florida Turnpike.  Meeting room fees range from $70 to $140.  If we book the room at either hotel we will be given a discount on the room for lecturer Levent, whose fee is $250 and a room for the night.  Final arrangements will be made in the coming week and an e-mail blast will go out to all members, area clubs and interested individuals with all the details of the event.  Set up time will be from 9:00 to 10:00 AM. Flea Marketers and Dealers will be open at 10:00 AM and close at 2:00 PM.  Levent will do his lecture from 2:00 until completion.  The Auction will take place following the lecture.

Jim Moody reviewed the status of the upcoming Hawthorne fund raising show, scheduled for 3:00 PM, Sunday, October 25, as part of "Magic Week".  Flyers have been printed for posting in surrounding communities, as well as programs for the event.  Tickets ($8.00) are already available – Contact Dan Dyer at DandyMagic@aol.com or 352-324-2787.  One "comp." ticket will be issued to each stage performer, close-up performer, stage hand, ticket taker, etc.  All members of the club should be involved in this event as the funds raised go toward our treasury which is used for the benefit of all.

It was suggested by Frank Martin, and approved by vote, that we try the Perkins Restaurant at the intersection of Routes 27 and 48, for next months meeting.  Frank also suggested that we select a theme for the meeting, in advance, so members have time to prepare a performance.  Two themes were chosen, "Trick Decks" and "Spooky Magic for Halloween".  Everyone who attends should be able to perform at next months meeting with more than four weeks to prepare!

New Business

Magic Ian brought up lecturers available in the coming months:  Darren Knight (mentalist) and Nathan Kranzo.  There did not seem to be much interest in a mentalist as a lecturer.  It was decided to try to book Nathan Kranzo in January, due to our prior commitments on the other dates he offered.

Guest Dan Stapleton reminded everyone to post magic events and happenings on www.flmagic.org.  He also reminded us about the combined Florida Association of Magicians/Daytona Festival of Magic coming up November 6th through 8th.  Go to www.daytonamagic.com for details and/or to register.  Charlotte Pendragon will have the premier of her new single act!  Magic Ian has been added to Sunday!

Brian Weller brought up the fact that our Sergeant at Arms rarely makes the meeting.  Ian appointed Brian as temporary Sgt. At Arms in the absence of Rich Hewitt.

October is Ring Election Month.  Please give strong consideration to running for a position on the board as President, Vice President, Secretary or Treasurer.  Give the current officers a break!

The 50/50 raffle, in the amount of $12 was won by Lee Langer.  We adjourned at 8:17.

Entertainment

The after meeting theme was "Everyone do one", emceed by Roger Reid.

Jim Moody led off the entertainment with a Jim Pace effect called "Cereal Killer".

Greg Solomon showed a few "sight gags" including "swine flu" and "chicklets".  He then performed an entertaining packet effect called "Marx Cards".

The REAL greatest living Polish magician, Stash (Tom Golabeck), assisted by the "not so great" Gruchnick, performed the World's Greatest Polish Card Trick, having the card chosen by his assistant vanish and reappear in the mouth of an audience member!!!

Roger Reid showed a little close-up effect where in two small objects (corks, bottle caps, tooth picks, may be shown to penetrate one another!

Since it was decided that there were to be no mental or card effects, Chuck Smith had a series of "hunches" come true by ending up in the pockets of various spectators.

Guest Dan Stapleton performed two excellent effects.  "Magician's Choice", which can be performed impromptu at a restaurant, a banquet, etc.  Everyone ended up with the spoon! And "½ and ½" wherein two randomly selected ½ cards were reunited.

Chris Dunn closed the evening with a patriotic knife which changed from Red, White and Blue stripes to an American Flag motif!

Though "everyone" did not perform, the performers we had did an excellent job!

     Respectfully submitted, Roger L. Reid
