Minutes – IBM Ring #258 – Thursday, May 22, 2014

President Jim Moody opened the meeting by introducing guest Rick Fitzgerald of The Villages.  George Smallwood has returned new knee and all.  Jim reported that member Bob Berruti was in the VA hospital.  The secretary will follow up and send a "get well" card for the membership.  The Secretary's minutes were approved as e-mailed.  The Treasurer's report showed a balance of $3986.55 at the end of April with 47 paid up members.

Old Business

The "Shrine Shows" resulted in a check from the Shriners of $330.  After our expenses the club netted very little.  A poor choice of date and Shrine political problems did not help.

Greg Solomon reported that "Darryl" has been confirmed for a lecture on Sun. July 27th at Mystic Ice Cream, on Rt. 466A.  Ryan Schlutz, a self working card magician, will be scheduled after the "snow birds" come home.  Local lecturers under consideration: Mark Mason and Michael Amaar.

The annual Ring Picnic is scheduled for Sun., June 22nd at Hickory Point Park.  We have a screened pavilion reserved.  You must put down a $5 deposit, to reserve a spot at the picnic, which will be returned when you attend.  Games, Prizes, Food and Fun!

The Florida Assn. of Magicians 50th Anniversary Convention begins on Fri. May 23 and runs through Mon. May 26.

Our Holiday Party, scheduled for Sat. Dec. 27 at the Shrine Hall, is now on hold as the Shriners threw us a curve and want to charge $300 for the use of the room.  Jim Moody will speak with Dr. Floyd Cogley, a Shrine Board Member, as to the trade off of our members providing "walk around magic" for their event, which would ordinarily cost hundreds of dollars, for the free room for our party.  An alternative site might be Mystic Ice Cream.

As noted above, the Shriners have again asked us to provide "walk around magic" for their holiday event with the families of children they have helped during the year.  Participation may depend on the result of the conversation between Jim Moody and Dr. Cogley.

The IBM/SAM combined convention will take place Mon. June 30 – Sun. July 6 in St. Louis.

The Ring is in need of a new person to handle the 50/50 raffle on a monthly basis.  Anyone interested in taking on this task, which only requires a few minutes of your time, please contact Jim Moody at crowdteaser@embarqmail.com

New Business

Greg Solomon put together a donation to the club library of books and CDs from the collection of passed member Magic Ian Sutz.

Greg also announced that his son and Ring member Aaron Solomon has qualified as an Eagle Scout after 11 years of work.  The Eagle Scout Court of Honor will take place on Sun. June 8, 2014, at 2:00 PM, at The Hospice Administration Building, 3231 SW 34th Ave., Ocala, FL 34474.  If you plan to attend RSVP by June 1, to presto01@juno.com or call 352-369-0099.

Greg made a motion to put the word "trick" back in the vernacular of IBM Ring 258, rather than "effect" or "conjuring presentation".  It was seconded by half the members and passed unanimously.

The 50/50 was won by Jeff Kublin in the amount of $14.

The theme for the evening's entertainment was "Grab Bag Magic".  Sealed bags were prepared with assorted magic paraphernalia.  Each magician was to select a bag and perform at least one "trick" with the contents.

Jim "trick" Moody opened by teaching how to tie a knot in a rope without letting go of the ends.  He was followed by DeLand Wayne who caused sponge balls and jumbo cards to transfer from his pocked to a paper bag.  Chuck Stylesmith, the Unknown Hobbling Magician, performed the jumping rubber band, threading the needle and a 4 coin roundup.  Dave Lyons turned a golf ball into an egg and produced more eggs from a purse frame.  Aaron Solomon produced a $100 bill from a color changing bag.  Roger Reid turned a green silk hanky into a rope.   And Greg Solomon closed the show with a color changing lollipop and a domino prediction.

Next month's theme will be: Discuss Wardrobes, Costumes and Theme's for Shows.

Respectfully submitted Roger L. Reid, Secretary, IBM Ring #258
