The new owner of the NY Café, Todd Whitmore, came in to the meeting to introduce himself, discuss the new menu and give out $5 discount cards to one of his other restaurants, Luigi's, in Eustis.
The latest on Jarvis Howell is that he is recuperating up North. Some inconsistent medication may have been the cause of his falls and injuries.
The Minutes of the May meeting of Ring #258 were accepted as e-mailed.
Treasurer George Smallwood reports $7484.07 in the bank as of
The Fielding West lecture, sponsored by Ring 170, was attended by a number of Ring 258 members. The lecture held in a private home with a spectacular home theatre that left something to be desired on lighting. The lecture was excellent. He showed a number of very useable moves, ideas and products. He is very adamant about exposure and his praise of Bev Bergeron. Most of his sale items were high priced.
Ring 258 ½ is on hiatus for the Summer.
The 2009 Villages Show is scheduled for Monday April 14. A suggestion was made to contact General Schwarzkopf and invite him to the show as an honoree, as both a fellow magician and founding father of Camp Boggy Creek. Ed Moravetz may be able to contact the General through his military contacts.
A date was chosen for our next "teach-in" at Camp Boggy Creek, Sunday, July 20 at
The Ring Picnic, held on Sunday June 22nd, was a big success. The food was excellent and after the rain stopped the party games were lots of fun. Thanks to Jim Moody who organized, George Smallwood who took care of the golf balls and raffles, Rich Hewitt who cooked up a storm, Bryan Weller for the use of his facility, Santa for the excellent photography and all those who brought great dishes and desserts!
The proposed lecture policy was discussed, debated, amended and voted on. The new Lecture Policy, now part of our By-Laws, can be found below. During the discussion of the Lecture Policy Chris Dunn made a call to Craig Fennessy, Ring 170 President and Lecture Chairman. He agreed to extend credit, for lecture attendees, to Ring 258 when necessary, and accept payment in due course from the Ring 258 Treasurer.
The
Greg Solomon brought in 3 large cartons of magic for sale @ half price from the Simply Unforgettable Party Shop. Everyone picked up something they could use and the Ring received a donation of $30.
Stash attended Magic on the Beach and placed 3rd in the close-up competition. He was also at the James Randi Convention, saw Penn & Teller and participated in an 800 person "spoon bend".
The 50/50 was won by Anna Marie Fay in the amount of $20!
The meeting closed with the announcement of next month's theme – "Magic With Silks".
The after meeting entertainment theme was "Linking Rings", with M.C. George Smallwood presiding.
Jim Moody gave a brief history on the linking ring effect and displayed an assortment of rings. Dandy Dan showed Bob Hayes' rings, which, sadly, he is not using anymore. Bryan Weller did a quick take off on the Amazing Jonathan's linking ring routine. Jim Moody did a "do as I do" ring routine with smiling Bob Morris. And Magic Ian did a full blown 8 ring routine with two helpers from the audience. Poor little Jason was embarrassed because he could not get the rings apart!
Respectfully Submitted, Roger L. Reid, Ring 258 Secretary
IBM Ring 258 - Lecture Policy
1. The President of the Ring will appoint a Lecture Chairman each year. He/she will be responsible for informing the Ring of upcoming lectures sponsored by Ring 258 and those sponsored by other Rings or Assemblies in the area. He/she will "book" lectures sponsored by Ring 258 and negotiate for the best possible price with other clubs having lectures. He/she will be responsible for making arrangements for venues to hold Ring 258 lectures and for accommodations for visiting lecturers when necessary.
2. Ring 258 will sponsor up to four (4) lectures per calendar year, at times, dates and locations to be determined, on other than regular meeting nights. The lectures will run the gamut of the magical arts so that they will appeal to as many members as possible. Paid up Ring members will attend for Free, as long as the Ring Treasury has a minimum balance of $2500. Should the treasury fall below that minimum members will pay for the lectures at a price to be determined. Visitors will pay the prevailing rate or that rate negotiated with other clubs.
3. Ring 258 will pay $15.00 toward lectures sponsored by Ring #170 as long as the Ring treasury has a minimum balance of $2500. Should the treasury fall below that minimum members will pay for the lectures themselves. Each paid up Ring member may attend up to 5 Ring #170 lectures per year. Attempts will be made to coordinate with other clubs on price, so that only one check need be issued for all Ring 258 members in attendance. When that is not possible a lecture receipt may be presented to the treasurer for reimbursement. The Treasurer will be responsible for keeping records of the number of outside lectures paid per member. An arrangement with
