July Meeting Minutes

Ring 258, Lake County Magic Club - Minutes for the July 24, 2008 Meeting

The meeting was called to order by the President, Jim Moody, at 7:03PM.  We had one guest, Aaron Solomon, the son of member, Gregg Solomon. We welcome club member, Lee Langer, back to our meetings after being under the weather with heart problems and the implant of a pace maker.

Two Ring members are working in the Central Florida Area over the next few days, Gregg Solomon is working a couple of venues in the Ocala area and Jim Moody will be at the Hilton Cocoa Beach this next weekend.

The minutes of the last meeting were accepted as transmitted via email. The Treasurers report showed that we have a balance of $6694.48 for month ending May 31, 2008 after having income of $86.00 and expenses of $875.59 for the period. The Treasurers report was accepted as read.

Committee Reports:

Ring 258½ is on summer break and will recommence activities in September.

The Camp Boggy Creek "teach-in" was a success. We had four members, Gregg Solomon, Jim Moody, Roger Reid, and Dan Dyer plus support from Gregg's son and wife teach campers, afflicted with sickle cell anemia, basic magic and provide them with illusions that they could take home with them. We also presented the Camp with a $500 check that represents our annual support of the Boggy Creek organization. We have been invited back to do walk-around at the annual "Harley-Davidson Ride for Children" that happens every October at the Campground.  (see photo's attached)

President Moody read the Club's new policy regarding lectures that was approved by the members at the June meeting.

The Hawthorne Show is scheduled for October 26. Posters to advertise the show are being developed and a walk-thru is planned for end of August or early September.

The Florida Magic Association is asking all clubs in Florida to keep the FMA up to date on each clubs activity and planned programs and lectures. The role of the FMA is to keep all Florida Rings and Clubs up to date on what's happening and to sponsor the annual Florida Magic Convention. Their web site is www.flmagic.org.

Gregg Solomon passed out free snap it/snapper puzzles to all attendees.

The business meeting was adjourned and we proceeded to the entertainment part of the meeting after a brief intermission.

The theme for tonight's program was Magic with Silks. The emcee was Mike LaMonica.

Jack Palumbo produced a silk that came alive in his hands. It called Glorpy or Haunted Hank.

Aaron and Gregg Solomon performed a dual illusion. Aaron changed a silk into a cane then the silk appeared in a clear crystal cube. Not to be outdone, father Gregg transformed a red silk into a white silk.

Jim Moody did a Duke's Diversion Dye where red, yellow, blue and green silks were transformed into a multicolored silk that was several feet long.

Dan Dyer vanished a yellow silk into a multicolored silk. Then made it reappear.

Stash, The Polish Magician, a.k.a. Tom Golabek, vanished an orange silk without using his thumb tip.

And finally, Ian Sutz showed us several of his Genie Four Star effects. He tied a silk on a rope. He vanished a silk and it reappeared in a borrowed eyeglass case. Red, white, and blue silks tied together magically changed places. And red, white and blue silks changed to a necktie.

All the performances were very impressive.  The meeting was adjourned at 8:15PM

"Thank You" to George Smallwood for handling the Secretarial duties in my absence.

     Respectfully Submitted,

     Roger Reid
