August Meeting Minutes

I.B.M. Ring #258 – August Meeting Minutes

The meeting was brought to order by Ring President Jim Moody at 7:01 PM.  We had four guests in attendance: prospective member Wally Libenson, Dan Stapleton, Fred Fuller and 12 year old Dan Scott.

Sadly, the passing of Magic Ian's daughter, Sara Lyn, due to a bout with cancer, was noted.  There will be a memorial at Ian's home this Saturday.  The club will make a donation to Hospice of Lake and Sumpter in her honor.

The minutes of the July meeting were accepted as e-mailed.  The Treasurer's Report was read by Jim Moody in the absence of George Smallwood.  Balance in the Ring account, as of July 31, was $6720.38.

Greg Solomon reported that Ring 258 ½ will come off Summer hiatus and begin meeting again on the 4th Sunday of each month at The Wellness Center in Ocala.

Upcoming lectures:  Doc Eason is a "possible" for October, details to be worked out.  Troy Hooser will be lecturing for Ring 170 at the I-HOP on Kirkman Road (across from Universal) on Wed. Sept. 10.

Roger Reid reported that we received a "Thank You", by e-mail, from Camp Boggy Creek for our last "teach in".  We have again been invited to do a "teach in" on any of their Fall, Winter or Spring family weekends.  We were also asked to return for the Harley Davidson Bike Ride in the Fall.

Ed Moravetz wrote to General Norman Schwarzkopf to invite him to be our honored guest at The Villages Show in April.  In a return letter General Schwarzkopf had to decline for health reasons but praised Ring 258 for the time, effort and financial support given to Camp Boggy Creek.

The Hawthorne Show, a club fund raiser, is set for Sunday, October 26th.  We will do a 90 minute performance with no intermission and split the proceeds with the Hawthorne Boat Club which is sponsoring the event.  We will be able to sell tickets, details being worked out.  Magic Ian created an excellent poster to advertise at Hawthorne and other communities.  Those appearing will be Jim Moody, Foo Ling Yu (Roger Reid), Dandy Dan, Magic Ian, Greg Solomon and Donald Pierson…the usual suspects.  There will be a walk through scheduled for September or early October.

Dan Dyer volunteered to chair a committee to work on "marketing" for Hawthorne and future shows.  Lee Langer joined the committee.

     Other Announcements:

Chris Dunn will be holding two "workshops" at his home in Maitland, featuring Dan Stapleton on November 17 and Aldo Colombini on December 11.  They will cost $10 and $30 respectfully.  These will not be lectures, but "hands on workshops" from which you will come away with training and materials.  Seating is very limited.  If interested contact Chris at youngdunns@yahoo.com.

Dan Stapleton is working on another recognition program similar to the one done recently with Bev Bergeron and Don Arthur.  Details of the honorees will be forthcoming.  He also mentioned that a web site www.flmagic.org has been set up so that all Florida magic organizations may post their events.

Magic Ian reported that his "Dances with Ropes" effect was performed at the SEAM convention and the performer place 2nd in the stage competition.

David Copperfield will be performing in Melbourne on January 28, 2009.

Former Ringling clown Wayne & Marti Scott, of clown shoe fame, will be having a "Cook-Out" on Sunday, Sept. 7 at 3:00 PM.  All magicians are invited.  Bring some magic to perform.  Mapquest the directions to: 23313 S. Dewey Robbins Rd., Howey In The Hills, FL 32737

The Florida State Magic Convention will take place Nov. 7 - 9, 2008 in Daytona Beach.  Some of the stars: Gaetan Bloom, David Roth, Bob Little and many more.  Lots of Dealers, 11 Lectures, 4 Contests, etc. Call Daytona Magic at 386-252-6767 for more details, or e-mail magi@daytonamagic.com.

The meeting was adjourned for a 15 minute break while the evening's M.C. Lee Langer gathered names of the performers for "My Favorite Trick" night.

Wow…16 performers in one evening!!!  Lots of "Favorite Tricks"!

Lee Introduced Roger Reid to open the after meeting show.  With the assistance of young Dan Scott, Roger used very minimal props, a silver dollar and a Bic pen, to bring gasps and applause from the audience.  First the pen disappeared, then the silver dollar disappeared and then both reappeared.

Our favorite Polish Prestidigitator "Stach" first told his favorite Polish joke, in his native tongue, and broke up everyone in the room even though they had no idea what he was talking about!  Then he vanished a borrowed, marked quarter and had it reappear in a sugar packet!

Lee Langer introduced himself.  He used three clear cups and two decks of cards, red and blue.  A card selected from the blue deck by a spectator was found among the red cards in a cup all by itself!

Mike LaMonica had a freely selected card torn into quarters along with 5 other cards.  All 24 of the quarter pieces were tossed into a paper bag.  Site unseen Mike was able to pick out the 4 matching quarters of the selected card.

Jack Palumbo did a beautiful version of the "Don Alan Bowl Routine" using a copper bowl and 3 sponge balls.  He took everyone by surprise with a bagel finale!

Chuck Smith performed "The Lazy Man's Rope Trick".  With the aid of Magic Ian and two lady assistants he tied ropes and hankies through Ian's jacket and around his body.  With a wave of his wand the ropes penetrated the jacket and Ian and the hankies came off the ropes with their knots in tact.

Dandy Dan performed a hanky vanish in a "sun and moon" hanky, then used same and made it come alive ala "Hyrum".

Guest Dan Stapleton performed Stewart James "Maraskill".

Bill and Anna Marie Faye performed "Christopher's Double Cross" where in they transferred written initials from burned slips of paper to those held in the hands of a spectator.

Santa Claus performed a bare handed vanish and reappearance of a packet full of sugar.

Greg Solomon performed "Celebrity ESP" divining celebrity names on cards that were simply thought of by any spectator.

Prospective member Wally Libenson performed two shockers, "Double Impact" an excellent card effect and "Professors Dream", which caught everyone off guard.

Jim Moody did his favorite "Cut and Restored Rope" routine and then closed with "Quadrabill".

Andy Long found a selected card by "shooting" it from the deck.  But some of his ammo was blanks.

"Circus Man" Brain Weller performed "Quarter Through Hand".

And Magic Ian closed the evening with three excellent effects, "Copentro" which no one had seen performed live for years, "Quarter in Balloon" which Ian does every time you see him and Harry Lorayne's "Stop Trick".

An incredible evening of live magic performed by some of the nicest guys I know!

     Respectfully Submitted,

     Roger L. Reid

     Secretary
