Minutes: September Meeting

I.B.M. Ring #258 – September Meeting Minutes

Ring President Jim Moody gaveled the meeting to order and introduced guest Sue Libenson, wife of new member Wally Libenson. He then presented Wally with the newly designed “New Member Packet” which contained a Ring membership certificate and assorted information about the I.B.M. and the Ring. Sue joined this evening as well!
Greg Solomon is working so many places it is impossible to list them all here. I can’t write that fast.
The minutes were accepted as e-mailed. The treasurer’s report showed a balance of $6676.23 at the end of August with membership up to 42 magi!
Ring 258 ½ begins operation again on the 4th Sunday of each month. Greg will report on the turnout and progress of our Junior Ring next month.
Camp Boggy Creek has invited us back to do another “teach-in” and for their “Bike Ride” fund raising event. The “teach-in: will be 2 ½ hours long. We can use anywhere from 4 to 8 “teachers”. Those interested in working the “teach-in” should contact Roger Reid at bonzo1114a@aol.com to participate. Roger will be sending out an e-mail poll to select the date for the teach-in from among the dates offered by the Camp. The “Bike Ride” is scheduled for Sunday, October 12. We will again offer magic, table to table, for the “bikers” enjoying lunch at Camp. We need a total of 4 close-up workers. Those who have offered are Lee Langer, Greg Solomon, Jim Moody, “Ducky” Lamoureux and Bill Scott. Some of those were “tentative”. Roger will send an e-mail to confirm at least 4 magicians for this event. If interested contact as above.
The Troy Hooser lecture, sponsored by Ring 170 was a real success. Four of our members were there and were impressed with Troy’s coin work. Ian even bought the notes!!!
The Villages show is scheduled for Tuesday, April 14, 2009. Interested in performing in the show, working the lobby or working back stage? Contact Jim Moody CROWDTEASER@EMBARQMAIL.COM
The Hawthorne show, scheduled for Sunday, October 26, is set. Posters were printed and the program is about to go to bed. The cast did a walk through and sound check on Sept. 13. The “Great Hall” is really great! They have a beautiful facility for us to perform in. Load in will begin at 12:00 noon with curtain time at 3:00 PM. Be there by 1:00 PM if you are working. Tickets can be purchased on line at the Ring web site or from any of a number of members. Dandy Dan has been getting the word out by visiting some of the local communities and putting up posters. Unbeknownst to him, his wife ordered a bus load of tickets!!! Lobby workers for the afternoon will be Lee Langer, “Ducky” Lamoureux, Jack Palumbo and Tom “Stash” Golabeck. Back stage workers will be Chris Dunn and Myrna Smith.
Magic Ian will do a special lecture, this coming Sunday, September 28th, at our usual meeting place, the NY Café, at 1:00 PM. He will combine two lectures, thus this will be a full 2 hours. The lecture will cover Ropes, Coins, Candles, Canes, Silks, Balloons and more Ropes, including Ian’s new “Dances with Ropes” routine! Members are free, Ring 170 members $10 and others $15.
Our November Ring meeting will be held one week earlier than usual, on Thursday, November 20, as the following Thursday is Thanksgiving.
Our combined December Ring meeting and Holiday Party will be held on Saturday, December 27 at Royal Highlands. Jim has arranged for the room and caterer. Members are free, guests $20. We will again have the crazy gift exchange of magic paraphernalia and body butter! Those planning to attend must sign up at the October meeting and pay for any guests. Entertainment has yet to be organized. Contact Jim Moody CROWDTEASER@EMBARQMAIL.COM to participate.
Jim announced that one of our long time members, Jarvis “Flydini” Howell, will be moving away to Virginia. We watched an abbreviated version of his “Flydini” performance at The Villages and then Jim presented Jarvis with a Certificate of Appreciation from the Ring. Jarvis was then voted unanimously to be a Lifetime Member of The Lake Count Magic Club.
The 50/50 raffle was won by Andy Long, in the amount of $16. Proceeds from the raffle go toward defraying the expenses of the Holiday Party.
Our next meeting will be on Thursday, October 23, with the theme “Thumb Ties and Escapes”. October is also Nominations for Officers for next year. Please consider running for a position and/or who you would like to nominate for next year’s board of officers.
After a short break, George Smallwood emceed the entertainment portion of the evening…Coin Magic. The first performer of the evening, though off topic, was Greg Solomon, who demonstrated his new “Anti-Gravity Machine” by actually floating off the ground within just a few feet of the audience!!!
Magic Ian wowed us with a trio of coin effects, Misers Dream, Matrix and Matrix with one Gold Coin.
“Ducky” Lamoureux, with the aid of “Binky” Weller, passed coins through his knees and then produced coins from the top of his head!
Jack Palumbo showed us how to make a coin pass through your pant leg and into your pocket!
Greg Solomon did “Nun Coin” and “Coins Across” with a jumbo kicker!
Lee Langer showed how to pass an assortment of coins through the table as taught to him by “The Man with the Million Dollar Hands”, Frank Garcia.
Andy Long did “Coins Across, Ala Andy” and one of my favorites “Coin and Pen” where in he surprises the spectators when the pen vanishes instead of the coin!
President Jim Moody performed “One in the Hand, Two in the Pocket” and “Inflation Coins”.
“Dandy Dan” Dyer performed a trio of effects. First an oldie but a goody “Coin thru Elbow”. Then he caused a coin to vanish from under a hat and reappear in the lap of an audience member. He closed with “Hopping Half, Sun and Moon”.
All in attendance had a great evening of magic. While some began the drive home others hung out a while after the official meeting was over to continue to talk magic.
Respectfully Submitted,
Roger “Foo Ling Yu” Reid
Secretary, Ring 258
