Meeting Minutes
I.B.M. Ring #258 – July 23, 2009
The meeting was called to order by President Magic Ian at 7:20 PM, after a delicious Denny's dinner.
We had one guest, Winston Powell, a "magimatician" who joined the Ring this evening.
The minutes of the June meeting were approved as e-mailed, as was the treasurer's report showing a balance of $7920.96 at the end of June.
Old Business – Donald Pierson's graduation party was attended by Greg "Simon", George Smallwood, Jim Moody and Roger Reid. The main topic of discussion was the offer Donald received to go on the road, for the summer, with a traveling magic show.
The "teach-in" at Camp Boggy Creek is set for Sun., Aug. 9, 2009 from 3 to 6 PM. Ring members planning to attend are: Wally Libenson, Greg "Simon", Jim Forsythe, Roger Reid and Chris Dunn. Santa will come along as photographic historian. Anyone interested in participating should contact Roger Reid at bonzo1114a@aol.com before the end of the month. A donation check, in the amount of $500, approved at an earlier meeting, was cut for presentation to Camp Boggy Creek at our "teach-in".
The Ring picnic, held at Bryan Weller's auction house, in Bushnell, was a great success! There was plenty of room for our rummage sale inside and the party games outside. Thanks to Jim Moody, George Smallwood, Rich Hewitt, Bryan Weller and anyone I may have left out who helped organize the event.
New Business – Anna Faye was hospitalized for heart trouble, but is home now recuperating.
The meeting place discussion was re-opened. Frank Martin has done some research and offered the Golden Corral, near The Villages, which has a private room and open dates on our meeting night, but a pricey buffet. Lee Langer again offered his newly finished temple's meeting room in Minneola. The same room might be used for lectures and our lecture/auction/flea market. The only requirement would be to put on one fund raising show per year. After some discussion it was decided to try it out and hold the August 27 meeting there. The address is: Congregation Sinai, 303A North US 27,
There was brief discussion of our fall Flea Market/Auction/Lecture, but it was tabled until the August meeting when we have had a chance to review the temple facility. It might be possible to hold it on a Sunday and accommodate lecturer Levent, who will be performing in

John Calvert is still at home recuperating from his minor stroke, hoping to get back on the road.
Frank Martin reports that Universal is hiring for "Halloween Horrors". Anyone interested in dressing up and carrying around a chain saw should call Universal Studios in
Magic Ian will be traveling to
Bryan Weller discussed the day, Wed., the monthly luncheon is held on. He suggested that it be moved to the second Thu. to accommodate more people. There was no action taken on the idea.
George Smallwood won the 50/50 raffle with a whopping take of $8! Just a reminder, the proceeds from the 50/50 raffle go to lowering our costs for our
The after meeting entertainment was excellent this month! The theme was "Teach-In".
Chuck Smith performed and then explained an effect from "Gems of Mental Magic" which used a magician's force of sorts to select a card, a duplicate of which was found in the prediction envelope, with the aid of a confederate. Great presentation! I think it fooled everyone!
Jim Moody magished and explained how to do a simple sponge ball routine, and some of the "Don Alan Bowl Routine", using the "one ahead" principal, the retention vanish and the "Thumb Crotch".
Roger Reid showed and taught "Flinch", an effect in which cards are counted to the table. No matter how many times they are counted "out of order" when spread on the table they are back in order.
Jack Palumbo taught us how to make a "neck crunching" sound with a plastic pill bottle.
Frank Martin gave us the technique of the "slop shuffle" and then what he calls "The 10's Trick", which was a combination of bits and pieces he learned from Randy Wakeman, Harry Riser and David Solomon. The effect has a smash ending no matter how poorly the audience assistants do their part!
New Member Winston Powell did some "mathemagics" with mathematical squares.
Jim Moody returned with "Proprioception", a beautiful card effect in which he was able to devine cards never seen but turned over under cover of an opaque cloth. He did not "tip" this one but referred everyone to the June issue of M-U-M to learn the effect.
Bryan Weller did Mark Wilson's "Torn and Restored Napkin" and EVERYTHING was restored!
Finally, President Magic Ian closed the evening by showing a beautiful card routine and teaching both the "double lift" and the "Elmsley count" which are essential to perform the routine.
The meeting ended at almost 10:00 PM.
Respectfully Submitted,
Roger L. Reid
