Meeting Minutes
I.B.M. Ring #258 – August 27, 2009
Held at our NEW LOCATION
Congregation Sinai, 303A N. RT. 27, Minneola, FL
The meeting was called to order by President Magic Ian, at 7:10 PM, at our now location, the meeting room of Congregation Sinai, in Minneola, FL. The location seems convenient to most members, the room is adequate for our needs and the larger sanctuary area may be available to us for special events such as lectures, shows and flea markets. (To be voted on by the congregation's board of directors)
We had a number of guests this evening. Ring 170 members, Mark Fitzgerald and Dan Stapleton, and Adam and Mayun Smith, son and daughter-in-law of Myrna Smith.
The Secretary's minutes were accepted as e-mailed and posted on the ring web site, which can be found at http://ring258.blogspot.com/. The Treasurer's report, also accepted, showed an end of July balance of $7168.90 and membership of 47 Magi strong.
Old Business – As compensation for the use of the facilities at Congregation Sinai Ring 258 will be obligated to put on one or two fundraising shows for the "building fund". If acceptable to the board of directors we may have some storage space in the facility to keep the Ring library, backdrop, etc.
Roger Reid reported that the Aug. 9 "Teach-In" at Camp Boggy Creek was a great success. Campers were taught basic magic effects and given props and instructions with which to go home and practice. Teachers were Wally Libenson, Greg Solomon, Winston Powell and Roger himself, accompanied by Santa Claus who took photographs of the event. An article and photographs concerning this event have been submitted to the Linking Ring and should be published in either the Oct. or Nov. issue. Entertainment Director Marshall Toy would like to invite us back to perform a show during one of the camp fall weekend retreats.
The Shoot Ogawa lecture and workshop were excellent according to those who attended, though turnout was poor for those events. The John Armstrong lecture was attended by 3 members of Ring 258.
Our next public fundraising show will be held on Sun., Oct. 25 at
The length of our monthly "business meeting" came in to question. As explained by Treasurer George Smallwood and President Magic Ian, the Ring is a corporation and certain rules and formalities must be followed at each meeting. The possibility of having the executive board conduct the business meeting prior to the general meeting, as Ring 170 does, was brought up. There was no motion on the idea.
New Business – Our Lecture/Flea Market/Auction is scheduled for Sun., Oct. 18. With the approval of Congregation Sinai it will be held in our new meeting location. Alternate sites are being considered should we not be approved. The Flea Market will begin at 9:00 AM and run until 12:00 Noon. We will break for lunch until 1:00 at which time Levent will give his lecture. The Auction will begin immediately after the lecture. Got lots of "magic junk" in your closet? Want to participate in the Flea Market? Contact Magic Ian at MagicianS@aol.com to reserve a table. Four dealers are already booked! Entry fee and flea market tables will be $10.
Guest Dan Stapleton had a few announcements. There will be a "Circus World
Greg Solomon reports that the Wizards Magic Theatre is being held weekly at the Seralago Hotel on Rt. 192 in
The next lecture held by Ring 170 will be by Jim Pace, to be held on Tuesday, September 15 at the I-HOP on
The formal part of the meeting was adjourned at 8:10 so we could get to the fun stuff. Lee Langer MC'd the show with some fun introductions.
Greg Solomon opened the show with a new twist on "needle through balloon". He performed the effect with the Jolly Green Giants diaper "safety pin". He then performed a startling card revelation effect called "Equivoque".
Guest Mark Fitzgerald first performed some fancy manipulations with solid silver dollars. Then he teased us with a "clean" rendition of Doc Eason's "Kate and Edith Too!" To the surprise of all he closed by "un-shuffling" a deck of cards in order to find a chosen one!
President Magic Ian performed an impromptu version of his spectacular "Dances with Ropes", a combination "Professors Nightmare" and "Linking Ropes" routine that is a real fooler!
Jim Moody enlisted the aid of guest Mayun Smith to perform "Topsy Turvy Bowling Pins". In the end she figured it out… sort of.
Dan Stapleton closed the evening with two effects. Max Maven's "Kayazue", finding the "blue rock" among those white rocks held in the hands of spectators. And a "book test", designed by Ron Frost, in which he found the selected word "immobilize".
Respectfully Submitted,
Roger L. Reid
Secretary, IBM Ring 258
