November Minutes

Meeting Minutes

IBM Ring #258 – Sunday, November 22, 2009

Since our regular meeting date falls on Thanksgiving, and we also had a lecture scheduled for Sunday, Nov. 22, our monthly meeting was held prior to the lecture.  We had low attendance at the meeting (18 of 48 members) even though there was a FREE lecture immediately following.

President Magic Ian opened the meeting at 12:35 PM.  The Secretary's minutes were approved as E-mailed.  Treasurer George Smallwood was not in attendance but sent his report, which was read into the minutes by the Secretary.  The Ring has a balance of $7245.12 as of the end of October, with a few dollars still owed to the Ring from the Hawthorne show.

     Old Business

President Elect Frank Martin brought up the continuing search for a permanent meeting place.  A number of locations were discussed…again.  Among them various restaurants, locations in The Villages and our former meeting place "The Youth Center".   After some discussion it was decided to try the Youth Center for the January meeting and see if it meets the approval of the membership.  Signage and lighting may need to be added to help members find the place.  If anyone has a suggestion for another meeting place please contact Frank at frank@frankmartinmagic.com or 352-274-3243.

The Hawthorne Show produced a profit to the Ring of between $400 and $500.  An exact accounting will be forthcoming from the treasurer.  Bill and Anna Marie Fay sold a bunch of tickets!  There were many positive comments about the show.

Roger Reid brought up an issue which was overlooked at the election last month.  Some of the officers elected are not members of "the international", which precludes them from holding officer positions.  According to all concerned this will be remedied before they are installed.

     New Business

The passing of Chris Dunn's mother was noted. The Secretary was asked to send a card.

Our latest visit to Camp Boggy Creek was chronicled on pages 38 & 39 of the November Linking Ring.

Jim Moody brought up an issue with e-mail messages.  Some members are not receiving Ring e-mails from the President.  Magic Ian explained that he has more than one e-mail list for people in magic and may have chosen the wrong one when sending the lecture reminder e-mail.  He also explained that if you don't have a sender's e-mail address in your "address book", your spam software may delete the message.  You should include e-mail addresses for both the current Ring President and Secretary in your address book and update after the installation of new officers in January.

There are currently 32 people signed up for the "Holiday Party".  It is FREE to members and $20 for guests to attend.  There will be lots of food, prizes and surprises.  Bring a gift valued at around $15 for the gift exchange.  If you don't know what to bring, contact any of the Ring "dealers", Magic Ian, Dandy Dan, Allen Konstan or Roger Reid who can provide you with magical gifts.   If you have not already done so, contact Committee Chairman Jim Moody at crowdteaser@embarqmail.com or 352-315-1100, prior to the December 1 cut off date, to sign up for the Holiday Party.

Ed Seitz has had a stroke, but is doing well.  The Secretary was directed to send a "get well card".

Greg Solomon gave a short review of the Daytona Magic/Florida Magicians Assn. convention.  His review was "somewhat" slanted due to being assaulted by the father of another youth competitor in the contest.  Chris Capehart was "great".  Charlotte Pendragon's show was poor and her lecture was "close to incoherent".  People walked out of both.

The 50/50 raffle, which helps fund our "Holiday Party", was won by Santa in the amount of $8.00!

The meeting was adjourned at 1:25 in order to aid Devin Knight in setting up for his lecture, which followed at 2:00 PM.  Devin lectured on both Comedy Magic and Comedy Mentalism.  He showed a wide variety of effects including a salt vanish to a light bulb, a new way to use a Svengali Deck, some beautiful card sleights, "non card trick card tricks", etc.  He had many things for sale at bargain prices, but he also explained how to make many of the effects at home.  The lecturer was very well received.

Respectfully submitted, Roger L. Reid, Secretary
