The meeting was called to order at 7:00PM by President Jim Moody. We had three guests: Brad Weller (brother of Bryan Weller), John Hoagland (brother-in-law of George Smallwood) and Berri Lee, a professional magician from North Lake County and a prospective new member for the Club.
Members who are working this month include Greg Solomon at a restaurant in Ocala and Dan Dyer at a function in the Villages.
There was no reading of the Secretary Report this month. The Treasurer's report indicated a balance of $ 5581.83 for the month ending June 30, 2007.
Old business included a discussion about the 2008 Villages Show. We have a tentative date of April 14, 2008 for the show at the Savannah Center if we decide to do another show at this venue. A committee of six members was formed to make recommendations
and decisions about the show. The committee is composed of Jim Moody, Ian Sutz, Lenn Lamoureux, Roger Reid, Dan Dyer and Lee Langer. The decisions on this show will be made by mid July.
GEORGE, PUT IN THE MINUTES HOW MANY MEMBERS ATTENDED THE PAVEL LECTURE AND THE COST TO THE CLUB.
Another bit of old business was the potential purchase of drapes for the club. Jim Moody has an opportunity to buy a set of drapes for $400 (a $2500 value). We can store the drapes at Ian Sutz's home. A motion to buy the drapes was made by Dan Dyer and seconded by Ian Sutz. The motion passed and Jim Moody will purchase the drapes.
The Club will host another Teach-In at Camp Boggy Creek on July 29. Six members have volunteered to assist with this effort put together by Roger Reid.
New Business included a discussion on whether we should do a Magic Show on Halloween night at the Lake/Sumter Community College. The auditorium has a capacity of over 400 people and the rental is reasonable. For this activity to be successful, we need active participation from all the members of the Club. The result of a lot of discussion on this opportunity was that the committee to deal with the Village Show will also address the Halloween Show.
Another piece of new business was the discussion of Ring 258 sponsoring a Young Magicians Group in Ocala. Greg Solomon is and would be the mentor of this group. It was agreed that this is a great idea and we should support the efforts of Greg and the Ocala Group.
National Magic Week will be celebrated again this year from October 24 to October 31. We will be doing nightly walk-around sessions at the restaurant again this year like we did last year. ONLY IF THE CLUB DECIDES TO DO THIS.
Richard Hewitt was the winner of the Trivia Question contest this month. What do you do with a Profunda? The 50-50 winner was Jack Palumbo.
The theme this month for the Magic Performing part of the meeting was Impromptu Magic. The MC for the evening was Bryan Weller and 13 members participated in the performance.
Ian Sutz started off the program by giving us his definition of Impromptu Magic and illustrating it by doing some bending and disappearing of a borrowed fork and then doing a linking ring routine with a "BORROWED" set of eight bracelets.
Chris Dunn did an article elimination routine where the audience was instructed to start at a random location and make moves as directed. The end result was that everyone ended up at the same article location.
Jack Palumbo amazed the audience by doing a fork bending routine using a borrowed fork from the restaurant.
Greg Solomon did a linking paper clip and rubber band routine using a ten dollar bill. He used a great patter about how the Clip-It brothers tried to rob the US Treasury and was captured by Inspector Elastic.
Aaron Solomon (Greg's Son) did a fantastic paddle (HOT ROD) routine using a set of multi-colored cards attached together by ribbons. Great Job Aaron, Keep at it.
Andy Long did a card routine where he put us all in a trance to make see things that were not there. He did an excellent job of card manipulation.
Donald Pierson took a key card and inserted it into the deck right next to where the selected card resided. This club is blessed with a good group of young talented magicians.
Lenn Lamoreux walked a rubber band up another rubber band and then did a very nice linking rubber bands routine.
Rich Hewitt "VANISHED" a coin from his hand. Then a did a packet card routine where the chosen card turned out to be imprinted on the back of another card.
Lee Langer showed us some very neat moves with a Rabbit Paddle Illusion.
Jim Moody showed us his coin through a cloth (GYPSY SWITCH) and then a knife through the cloth. He closed with a paper match penetration illusion.
George Smallwood did a linking paper clip and rubber band using a dollar bill. Then segued into three different versions of jumping rubber bands on his fingers.
Dan Dyer closed out the evenings performances with a coin from hand to mouth illusion. He then changed a borrowed dollar bill into a fifty dollar bill and then presented the $50.00 to the treasurer. This was the proceeds from the selling of magic card decks at the Village Show in April.
The meeting was adjourned at 9:15PM
