January Minutes 2009

Hi Fellow Magi,
First, and most importantly, I would like to thank Dandy Dan Dyer for doing a spectacular job (as you will read in the attachment below) on the minutes in my absence.  (Now I know who to nominate next year!)
New members: gavin Foley, Wayne Hughes, Karen and David Lyons.

Magically,

Roger "Foo Ling Yu" Reid

The Minutes: Hello everyone here are the minutes of our Lake County Ring 258 meeting, which is held the 4th Thursday of every month. We are presently meeting at the NY Café right here in Leesburg, FL. All are welcome. New Incoming President Magic Ian started by welcoming a number of quests. Member Tom Golabek aka Stash the Polish Magician and his better half Myrna invited Glenda and Dennis from Rockland, NY. . Karen and David Lyons made it to our club in Leesburg after reading our great ring reports. They both came down from Gainesville, FL. to join us. One of our past presidents Dandy Dan Dyer invited a new junior member Gavin Foley and his father Roger. We want Gavin in the front row at every meeting. His interest in magic was evident. Finally new member Wally Libenson and his supportive wife Sue invited Dick Seltzer from PA. We gained 4 new members today bringing our club roster to 44. A nice number!
The Minutes of the last meeting and the treasurer’s report were accepted as read, then on to new business. Wally wanted the minutes to reflect that out going Pres. Jim Moody and his wife Linda did a smashing job on producing and hosting our Ring 258 Annual Banquet this year. The event was held at the Clubhouse in the community where Jim and Linda live. Past Pres George Smallwood was the meet and greet celebrity .Special note: Wally, Jim and Tom and his crew did a great job entertaining us on the big stage there. Thanks for a great show. The food was excellent and games and gift exchange is always fun. Kudos to all who helped. The room is booked already for next year.
Member Greg Soloman gave a report on our spin off junior club, Ring 258 ½. Many thanks to Dan Stapleton who came all the way up from Orlando to present his Lecture to the junior members of this club in Ocala. Dan always does a great job and always has been a moving force in magic in Florida. Thanks Dan for your expertise and Thanks Greg for maintaining a place for the younger magis to meet.
On the topic pf upcoming events : Ring 258 will be hosing a Tom Craven Lecture on Feb 15th at 1:00 pm right here at NY Café. The club is also producing our Big Annual Show on the Savannah Stage at The Villages of Lady Lake, FL this year on Tues. April 14th. Big news here is in the name: An Evening of Magic Featuring John Calvert. Our club magicians will perform the first half and John Calvert will perform the second. There will be two 90 min shows at 6:00pm and 8:30pm. Ticket prices are $12 for residents of the Villages and $15 for the public. John Calvert will also be presenting his Lecture on the following day April 15th (Wed.). We are looking forward to a fabulous event with a Living Legend still performing . Greg Soloman wanted this report to reflect that he “handed a flyer to everyone” on an upcoming event that Dan Stapleton is producing and hosting in Orlando on March 16th. A Legends of Magic Tribute to Celeste Evans and Jack Kodell.
Let it be known that the club archives were officially transferred to Pres. Ian from out going Pres. Jim at this meeting. This evening the 50/50 raffle went to Magi Ed Moravetz.
Our evening’s topic for entertainment was “Fire and Water”. Or “Anything else you would like to do.” Our Emcee for the evening was Wally Libenson who introduced Tom Golabek aka Stash the Polish Magician. Stash presented the Chalice of the Miami Dolphins, which was filled with water. Using the Ritual of the Blessed Blue Babushka he made the water and chalice vanish even after it was observed to be there by many qualified spectators! No Way Stash!
Next Wally introduced our President MagicIan who then introduced his Duck Named Gwendolyn…A “Europeeing Duck” who kept adding to the show. Ian then proceeded to extract three, stemmed cordial glasses all filled with liquid from a small brown lunch bag. (A MagicIan Original). He then proceeded to read the news, which was all-good, and then he poured the contents of each glass into the folded newspaper. The liquid vanished! You could say that it was “In The News!” But wait there is more..He proceeded to pour it back out into each cup..one by one. Special Note: Don’t miss MagicIan’s up coming Full Parade in the Linking Ring in June.
Next up was Lenn Lamoureux aka Ducky with his sidekick Rocky Raccoon who was a little Teed off because Ducky couldn’t shoot a ray gun straight and Rocky’s tail was blown off instead of the tee being shot out of Rocky’s mouth! Rocky was the only one not laughing!
Next up was Greg Soloman who demonstrated how he learned how to eat fire by placing a lit match on his tongue. Kids don’t try this at home! Greg proceeded to encourage our young guest Gavin to freely pick a any card from a deck and memorize it and show it to the rest of the crowd. Greg then took a straight piece of wire, which he heated with a flame from a lighter to reveal the name of the selected card as the wire began to eerily bend into a shape that resembled a Jack of Diamonds. And we thought it was just another ordinary pick a card trick.
Wally then introduced himself and immediately asked for assistance. Our favorite Assistant Myrna Golabek joined him. Wally filled a cup with water, placed a flimsy card over the top and to Myrna’s surprise, quickly placed the whole thing upside down upon her head. On the count of three he then slipped the card out and Wow not a drop was spilled even as the cup was slowly lifted from her head.upside down… this was a Super Super effect!
To close this evening of magical talents Wally brought out going Pres. Jim Moody aka The Crowd Teaser to the stage. Jim pulled a buck from his pocket and formed a tube and poured a bit of water in it where it the water remained suspended. Jim then reminisced about when he went to the track the other day. He had a lot of Hot Tips in a book that literally burst into flames( Bev Bergeron would be proud). Jim then showed us all that it only takes six bucks to have fun at the track over and over and over again. He came out way ahead with money in his wallet.
We had loads of fun this evening and you are welcomed to join us. We meet the fourth Thursday of every month at the NY Café in Leesburg, FL at 7:00pm.
