IBM Ring 258 - Meeting Minutes
Thursday, February 26, 2009
President Magic Ian opened the meeting by introducing two guests, Bob Martino and Ed Seitz, who both joined the ring this evening. The minutes of the January meeting were approved as e-mailed. The Treasurers report was approved showing a healthy balance of $7349.21 as of Jan. 31, 2009, with membership at 44 strong.
Under Old Business the main topic of discussion was "The Villages Show" scheduled for Apr. 14. Ticket selling will begin shortly, details to come from Ian in the next two weeks. Lobby "close-up" volunteers are Lee Langer, Wally Libenson, Tom "Stash" Golabek, Lenn "Ducky" Lamoureux, Jack Palumbo and Dandy Dan, (if not on stage that evening).
Our Headliner is the legendary John Calvert who will do the second half of each show. Potential performers for the first half Bev Bergeron, Steve Hart, Dandy Dan, Jim Moody, Greg Solomon, and David Lyons. The possible M.C.'s are Bev Bergeron, Frank Martin, and/or a "voice over" by Brian "Circus Boy" Weller. The show committee will meet to make the final decisions.
Since the last meeting lectures by Steve Kissel on "Kids Magic" and Tom Craven on "Stand Up" were well received by those in attendance.
Under New Business there are quite a few things happening in the area. Dan Stapleton briefly discussed the
Jeff McBride will be performing at Sleuths on Mar. 18 ($25) and will lecture that evening for a $25 fee. In addition he will offer a "special workshop" the next day on Mar. 19 for $125. On Mar. 28th F.A.M.E. will hold it's annual Auction and Lecture featuring Mark Mason. On Apr. 14 (in conflict with our Villages show) Ring 170 will host a lecture by Paul Gertner. And last, but certainly anything but least, John Calvert will lecture for Ring 258 on Wed., Apr. 15, the day following The Villages Show, time and location to be announced.
The 50/50 raffle prize of $21 was won by Karen Lyons, wife of new member David Lyons. Then the meeting was adjourned in preparation for an audition and the theme of the evening "Metal Magic".
Under very limited space and performing conditions David Lyons and his wife Karen, billed as "Silver FoxFire & Co." performed an extremely well done silent act to music. The act included "silk to cane", "silk thru cane", "cane through mirror to flowers", the production of two doves from silk handkerchiefs, a number of rope effects and manipulations and closed with a series of flower productions ending with a large "Bowtania". I'm sure the committee will look favorably on this audition.
M.C. Brian Weller introduced Greg Solomon who, followed the theme of the evening, useing coins for his "Metal Magic". First he did "Nun Coin" then he produced a coin from his "Trick Knee"!
Magic Ian used the classic metal "ball and tube" to wow us with some rarely seen moves. (I'll bet everyone went searching through their stuff when they got home that night.) Ian added card in locket to groans, a few moves with an Okito Coin Box and some very pretty handling of the classic "Hot Rod". Look for a "Parade" from our own Magic Ian in the June issue of The Linking Ring.
Tom "Stash" Golabek had everyone in hysterics when he reprised the Uri Geller act of spoon bending with the aid of materials from a wide variety of sources such as Denny's, I-HOP and the Hilton.
And M.C. Brian Weller closed the evening with a short story about becoming a Ring Master at the Circus and the importance of focusing on the acts, rather than on the M.C.
Respectfully Submitted,
