IBM Ring #258

Meeting Minutes – March 26, 2009

To say the least it was an interesting evening! The NY Café gave away our private room, which had been a standing reservation for over 3 years now, and ignored all of our members. So it was decided to move on down the road to Denny's and hold our meeting there. Denny's was most accommodating.

Vice President Greg Solomon opened the meeting at 7:42 PM, in the absence of Magic Ian who had a conflict this evening. Guests Bob Sicarus and Ed Fishman were introduced. Bob joined the club.

The Secretary's minutes of the February meeting were approved as e-mailed. The Treasurer's Report showed a healthy bank balance of $7177.96 at the end of February, with a paid membership of 46 Magi.

Old Business – The John Calvert Lecture will be held on Monday evening, April 13, 2009, from 7:00 to 9:30 PM, at the Laurel Manor Recreation Center (The Jefferson Room), 1985 Laurel Manor Drive in The Villages. The lecture is FREE to all members of Ring 258. A sign up list was passed around.

The Villages shows are all but upon us. The shows take place Tue., Apr. 14, @ 6:00 and 8:30 PM, at the Savannah Center. Head shots and bios must go to Ian MagicianS@aol.com immediately so that the program may be formatted and printed. Load-in begins at 3:00 PM. Stage hands should be there at that time, as should stage performers who need to work with sound, lighting and stage hands to arrange entry's, exits, curtains, etc. Close up workers should arrive no later than 5:00 PM to set up, as ticket holders arrive early. Dan Dyer took care of ticket sales this evening. We had 20 "comps" to give out to those who are working. Chuck Smith and son will be video taping the entire event. Stage Performers are Bev Bergeron, Jim Moody, Dan Dyer, Magic Ian and David & Karen Lyons. The order of performance has yet to be determined. John Calvert will perform the second half of each show. Lobby close-up workers are Len Lamoureux, Lee Langer, Jack Palumbo, Wally Libenson, "Stash" Golabeck and Greg Solomon.

New Business – Ring 170 will hold its annual Flea Market/Auction/Lecture on Sat., Mar. 28, at Christ the King Lutheran Church on Apopka–Vineland Road. Lecturers will be Steve Hart and Mark Mason.

There was a lot of discussion concerning a new meeting place after the fiasco that was forced upon us. Jim Moody reported we were bumped out of our reserved room for the monthly luncheon the past 2 months as well. Alternate sites were discussed. Denny's would be glad to accommodate us if we simply call ahead and tell them we are coming. They will shut down one side of the restaurant for us. So we have a place to go. Santa suggested the possible use of rooms at the Lake Square Mall. Jim Moody will follow up. Lee suggested a location in Clermont that his temple is preparing. Free rent for putting on a show once a year. Dandy Dan will check in to using the Leesburg Public Library. Myrna Golabeck will check into Golden Corral. It was suggested that everyone find out how late the various venues can remain open on a Thursday evening.

Dandy Dan Dyer will be working at "Kids College" for 2 ½ months this Summer at Lake Sumter C.C.

Greg Solomon reported that Chuck Smith visited Ring 258 ½ and taught the budding magicians how to make their own "Organ Tubes" and "Changing Cards" with rubber cement from the 1930's!

Roger Reid reported receipt of our annual donation letter from Camp Boggy Creek. He will wait until after The Villages shows to make a proposal as to our yearly donation, "teach ins" and the "Bike Ride".

Dandy Dan reported that Dan Stapleton's Tribute to Jack Kodel and Celeste Evans was excellent as was the venue. A DVD of the event will soon be available from Chuck Smith for $10.

The Jeff McBride show at Sleuth's, including the Miser's Dream, was excellent as was his lecture

The 50/50 of $26 was won by Santa Claus!.

Because we began the meeting so late, due to the spontaneous change in location, we did not have a performance portion of the evening. But, some of the guys entertained a few of the other dining patrons with close up magic and balloon animals at the tables.

An Ad Hoc "Show Committee" meeting was held to iron out some of the details for the show. The results of the meeting were e-mailed to President and show producer Magic Ian for his review.

Respectfully submitted,

Roger L. Reid, Secretary, I.B.M. Ring #258.
