May Minutes
Meeting Minutes – IBM Ring #258
Thursday, May 27, 2010
“Interim” President Jim Moody opened the meeting at 7:02 PM. Acknowledged guests were: Ron Dunn (father of Chris Dunn), Alan and Helena Stone (friends of the Libenson’s), Florence Lamonica (wife of Mike Lamonica) and Roger Many, who joined the Ring later in the evening.
Jim Forsythe is in the hospital with congestive heart failure. The secretary was asked to send a “get well” card on behalf of the Ring.
The minutes of the April meeting were read aloud and accepted with one minor correction. The treasurer’s report, filed by George Smallwood, was read by Jim Moody in George’s absence. The Ring has a bank balance of $6901.35, as of the end of April, with a roster of 47 members.
Old Business
The proposed show at the Sumter County Fairgrounds has had no action taken due to the fact that acting president and committee chairman Bryan Weller has not been at the last two meetings. This item was tabled for discussion again at the June meeting.
In lieu of the Sumter County show the prospect of another fund raiser at Hawthorne was discussed briefly. Inquiries will be made and reported on next month.
Last month’s “Got Milk?” lecture, by Roger Reid, was well received by those who attended, though the attendance was low. Roger announced that he would sell a few more items to those who e-mailed and do a very short version of the lecture at the break for those who wish to participate.
Camp Boggy Creek – Roger Reid reported that he is still waiting for a response from Camp as to dates they would like us to appear this summer and for the “Harley Ride for Children” in the fall.
The Chris Capehart lecture was well received. Some thought there was quite a bit of commercial magic. Others thought that there were “too many card tricks”. One effect was “Beamz”, an electronic apparatus which played music and sound effects with the wave of a hand.
New Business
Due to the failure of three of our elected officers to either pay their 2010 dues and/or retain membership in “the International” they have become ineligible to hold Ring office. Recognizing this, the one remaining officer in good standing, Treasurer George Smallwood, took it upon himself to appoint an “interim” board of officers to carry on Ring affairs until another election can take place. The interim board is President Jim Moody (Past President), Vice President Wally Libenson and Secretary Roger Reid (Past Secretary) with George Smallwood remaining as Treasurer. George’s actions were approved unanimously in a formal vote. Past Presidents also on the Board of Directors are Alan Konstan and Dandy Dan Dyer.
President Jim Moody read the dues protocol, after which he reminded that if dues had not been paid by the end of the first quarter of the year members would be dropped from the Ring Roster. The roster will be cleared of those unpaid and they will no longer receive ring e-mails.
Aldo Colombini is scheduled to visit us on Tue., June 1 at 7:00 PM, for a “dealer demo” all priced at $10! The event will be held at our usual meeting location, Denny’s on Hwy. 27 & 441.
Our June 24 meeting will be another “dealer demo” by Harry Allen of Daytona Magic. It will be held at the Best Western Hotel* at the intersection of Highways 441 and 27, just behind “Ramshackles” at a nominal cost for the use of the room. There was a discussion as to who should be allowed in to this type of meeting and/or lectures held on meeting nights.
Santa announced that he has a large box of books to donate to the Ring library.
Jim Moody appointed George Shield Sergeant at Arms and Santa official Ring photographer.
Trevor Duffy has been booked to lecture on Sunday, August 15. Location to be announced.
After some discussion it was decided that both the Aldo Colombini and Harry Allen events are “dealer demo’s” as opposed to lectures, leaving room for 2 more Ring sponsored lectures in 2010.
Chuck Smith announced that he had heard from Terry Seabrook who would like to book some lectures in “the states”. That may happen later in the year.
Dandy Dan asked for a round of applause for “the guys who stepped up to take care of the Ring”. He also suggested that we need a new “purpose” for the ring since we no longer have “The Villages” show to work on. He asked for more members to be involved in Ring activities.
The 50/50 was won by Dandy Dan in the amount of $11.
The official portion of the meeting was closed and Mike Lamonica was appointed M.C. for the theme portion of the meeting “Money Magic”. As M.C. Mike performed 5 and a 1, 1’s to 5’s and a coin matrix under cover of a handkerchief.
Greg Solomon performed a series of coin sleights including heads/tails, knee coin (trick knee), coins across to jumbo and he had a “frog in his throat”.
Lee Langer reprised Frank Garcia’s “Coins through the table”.
Wally Libenson turned a $2 bill into 2 $1 bills and then vanished a coin using “blackout”.
Aaron Solomon performed “Penny Smasher”… “a magic trick”.
Chuck Smith held our attention with “Remote Viewing”.
Jim Moody turned a dollar into quarter dollars and then did a very smooth “Six Dollar Repeat”.
Dandy Dan Dyer brought out the venerable “Nickles to Dimes” and presented “Hopping Half” with some interesting patter about “profit”.
Roger Reid vanished a pen and a coin. He followed with a coin matrix under cards and closed with Jerry Somerdin’s “By George” in which a $1 coin appeared from the folds of a $1 bill.
Roger Many did “Big Money”.
And Bill Faye closed the show, off theme, by floating a Styrofoam cup in the air and asked for suggestions as to what he might add to make the effect better! “Slush Powder!”
Mike Lamonica thanked everyone and closed the evening’s festivities.
Respectfully Submitted,
Roger L. Reid, Secretary
