October Ring Minutes

Minutes – IBM Ring #258, Thur., Oct. 27, 2011

Pres. Jim Moody opened the meeting introducing guests Dave and Karen Lyons (former members who rejoined), Dan Jacobs and Bob Drake.  The Secretary's report was approved as e-mailed.  The treasurer's report showed a balance of $5686.92 at the end of Sept., with 53 members.

Good & Welfare

Jean Hayes, Bob's wife, sent a "thank you" for all the cards from members.  News was received just this week that Honorary Lifetime Member Jarvis Howell had passed away.  Bill and Anna Marie Fay will take a leave of absence from the club due to illness.

Old Business

Camp Boggy Creek – Six members attended the "Bruce Rossmeyer Ride for the Children" performing table to table magic while the bike riders ate lunch.  Numbers were down this year due to rain, but lots of money was raised and everyone had a great time.  The Camp's quarterly magazine "Creek Speak" was received.

"Magic Day" – Our Flea Market – Auction – Lecture will be held on Sat., Nov. 12, at the Days Inn,

20390 N. US Highway 27, Clermont. FL 34715, (352) 429-0483.  The lecturer will be Mr. Bill Wisch, doing a retrospective on Tony Slydini. (See Flyer Attached)

Mt. Dora Show – The marketing campaign by Bryan Weller included stops at more than 300 locations (stores, schools, etc.) where posters and coupon books were left.  Two e-mail blasts went to many thousands of people this week.  We still need more help back stage and with assisting audience members to the stage.  Volunteers will be at Mt. Dora's "Spooktacular" on Friday night to hand out coupons.  And Bryan Weller and family will do a spot before the "Rocky Horror Picture Show" presentation in the theatre that same night.

Synagogue Show – is scheduled for Wed., Dec. 28 in Clermont.  We will split the proceeds 50/50.

Holiday Party – is scheduled for Thur., Dec, 29 at Royal Highlands.  This event is FREE to members and $20 for guests.  Members who joined in the current year will have their costs prorated.  Reservations must include $5 to hold your spot, returned when you arrive.

New Business

Breakfast – The Veterans of Foreign Wars are doing a "Pancake Breakfast" fund raiser on Fri., Nov. 11.

Elections – Nominations were taken from the floor.  The slate of officers – President Jim Moody, V.P. Roger Many, Secretary Chris Dunn and Treasurer George Smallwood were elected by acclamation.  They will be installed at the Holiday Party and take office as of Jan. 1, 2012.

Next Meeting – Our next meeting date falls on Thanksgiving.  An alternate date of Thur., Nov. 17 has been selected and approved.  The theme for that meeting will be "Turkey Magic" or the worst "turkey" of a magic effect you ever purchased.

Review – Chris Dunn's friend Josh Gair brought back a few excellent effects from his trip to Singapore.  They were: "Eight Penetration" where a card in a window envelope is penetrated by a pencil and comes out unscathed and "Guri Guri Card" where in the magician reveals the wrong selected card which then visibly transforms into the correct card.

Greg Solomon – met David Roth at Fantasma Magic who offered to do a lecture for us.  Greg will be working Sun. evenings at the McDonald's in Bellevue.  He has "Rainbow Decks" available.

50/50 – was won by Ron Dunn, in the amount of $10, who donated his winnings back to the Ring..

Entertainment

The after meeting entertainment was emceed by one of our newest members, Terry Harris, to the theme of "Halloween or Holiday Magic".  First up, George Shield blew us away with a great card effect called "Constipation Card" in which a mini outhouse revealed the card.  Dandy Dan followed with "Glorpy" and a "Pumpkin Prediction".  Roger Reid demonstrated a "square circle", in the form of a plastic pumpkin and castle, which produced candy for everyone. David Lyons did "Haunted Key and Castle".  Magic Ian performed "Séance Cloth" and the "Haunted Pack".  Greg Solomon showed "Grave Mistake" and "Holey Moley".  George Smallwood impressed with "Two Minds in Sync."  Then, off theme, Brian Weller expanded money with "Big Penny".  And last, but certainly not least, emcee Terry Harris memorized an entire deck of shuffled cards!

     Respectfully submitted, Roger L. Reid
