Minutes – IBM Ring #258, Thursday, March 22, 2012
The meeting was opened by President Jim Moody at 7:00 PM sharp. The Secretary being absent Roger Reid was appointed to take the minutes. (Again!) Guests were Brad Weller and Bob Betz who arrived well into the meeting.
The passing on of Ed Seitz was announced and a condolence card was passed around for all members to sign. Three of our members attended the funeral.
The secretary’s February meeting minutes were approved as e-mailed. Treasurer George Smallwood reported a bank balance of $5555.15 at the end of February. We have 56 members on the books, a few of whom have not yet paid their 2012 dues. Those who have not paid their dues by the end of March will be dropped from the roster.
Old Business
Jim Moody gave a “Thank You” to Roger Many for running the February meeting in his absence.
Camp Boggy Creek – Roger Reid reported that he has e-mailed the appropriate people at Camp to let them know we are ready, willing and able to return for another “Magic Teach In” and for the “Bike Ride” in the fall. They have not responded yet as there is usually some staff turnover during the off season. Roger also reported that he responded to an article in The Linking Ring requesting information on instances of “Benevolence in Magic”, telling of our longstanding relationship with Camp Boggy Creek.
Lectures – Roger Many listed upcoming lectures and discussion ensued, resulting in the cancellation of Devin Knight who many members had seen before and preferred not to see again. We are trying to get Fred Moore for Sun., Apr. 22. We will have Rafael Benetar on Sat., June 2 at 7:00 PM. Ring 170 will have Dan Garrett on Wed. Sept. 5. And Ian is trying to get Jim Munton for an Aug. date.
Ocala Show – Greg Solomon reported great reviews for the show and income for the club of $1150. He was disappointed at the number of tickets sold by the band members. Wally asked for a round of applause for Greg & Coni’s work on this event.
Carter Collection – The auction of this newly donated collection was postponed from Mar. to Apr. due to the proximity with the Ring 170 Auction/Flea Market. Jim Moody and George Smallwood handled the identification, sorting and listing of the collection and recommended reserve prices on some items, but the membership wanted a simple auction at whatever prices were offered. Mrs. Carter requested that we make a donation to the hospice where Mr. Carter passed away. The Ring Secretary was directed to contact other IBM Rings and SAM Assemblies in Central Florida to make them aware of the auction which will take place at our Apr. 26 meeting. (I suggest that the list of items be attached to that e-mail to attract buyers. Temp. Secy.)
Shows – We currently do not have any shows planned, fundraising or other wise. The possibility of returning to Hawthorne was mentioned.
Ring Picnic – will take place at the home of George Smallwood again (Thank You George!) on Sunday, June 10 at 1:00 PM. Oakwood will cater again. Bring your own drinks and desserts.
Holiday Party – We need a new location this year. Wally will look in to a location in The Villages for either Wed., Dec. 27 or Thu., Dec. 28.
Flea Market/Auction/Lecture – There was little support for another event like this as we had very low attendance and just broke even last time.
New Business
Tampa Convention – coming in June. Last one was excellent with lots of dealers and lectures.
Donation – It was recommended that we make a donation in the name of Ed Seitz to Congregation Sinai. Wally recommended that a tree be planted in Israel. Lee Langer will be consulted on this.
Daytona Magic Convention – will take place on Nov. 2, 3 and 4.
Magi-Fest – in Columbus, Ohio was Cancelled after many years.
Magic Jubilee – scheduled for Aug. 24 – 26, in New Jersey has been cancelled due to the illness of Tony Spina, one of the principles and former partner in Tannen’s Magic.
Review – Greg Solomon displayed “Invisible Paint” which he got as part of his deal to buy a portion of Creative Magic. It is beautifully made with some surprise features, but quite expensive.
Review – Jim Moody displayed an aluminum “Hot Rod” which had the “spots” drilled out and painted. It was excellent in look and handling.
DVD Library – has been reorganized to make it easier for members to borrow a DVD.
The after meeting show was emceed by Don. The topic of the evening was the magic principle “Restoration”.
Magic Ian and Jim Moody did their individual interpretations of “Cut and Restored Rope”. Roger Reid’s “Torn and Restored Card” came back in a lime! Skip Waversack used Super Glue to bring back his card. And Bryan Wellers returned with a burst of a balloon. It was quite nice to see that though the general theme was represented repeatedly by “Torn and Restored Card” and “Cut and Restored Rope”, each presentation was fresh, different and entertaining! Wally Libenson rounded out the theme by performing “The No Tear Paper Tear”. To end the evening, “Stash” Golabeck held a Press Conference to announce that he is “Running for President” against “Jimoody” in the fall.
Respectfully Submitted,
Roger L. Reid (Temporary Secretary)
