June 2012 Minutes

Ring 258 Meeting Minutes
Thursday, June 28, 2012

The meeting was opened at 7:00 p.m. by President Jim Moody.  Tom Golabek led the club in the Pledge of Allegiance.  We had no visitors or guests at this month's meeting.  Last month's minutes were approved and accepted.  The Treasury report was read and accepted.  There was nothing to report on the Boggey Creek show.  The Rafael Benatar lecture on June 2, 2012 was very well recieved by the club.  Mr. Benatar did an excellent job.  Lecture chairman Roger Many reported that our next lecture will be Sunday, August 26, 2012 by James Munton.  The lecture will be held at 1:00 p.m. at the Best Western in Leesburg, Florida.  We will also be having a lecture by Meir Yedid on Sunday, October 7, 2012.  We are waiting confirmation for the Carroll Baker lecture on October 28, 2012.
Our annual picnic was a success.  The food was excellent again this year.  Judy Dunn went above and beyond in setting up the games and activities.  A big tip of the top hat to you Judy.  Thank you from all of us.  No date has been set for next years picnic.
The club had a lengthy discussion about the one day convention in Tampa and the Kreskin show in Mt. Dora on Saturday, June 16, 2012.  The club will be making a donation to Hospice in the memory of William Carter.  Our flea market has been cancelled for this year and no decision has been made on the Holiday party or gift exchange.  We had no product reviews this month.  Dan Dyer reported on the funeral service for Jack Kodell.  A great tribute to a great magician.  Dan also reported that some old paperwork and pictures were found that related some of the past history of Ring 258.  It will be placed in the archives.  The subject of changing the meeting night from the 4th Thursday of the month to the 3rd Thursday of the month was discussed.  This was tabled until the July meeting.
Roger Reid did a great job tonight with his "Show and Tell" on gimmicked coins.  He covered items such as Scotch and Soda, Cigarette thru Quarter, Hopping Halves Sun and Moon and many more.  Much was learned tonight by the club members.
Magic Ian Sutz will be doing next month's "Show and Tell" on the Steel Ball and Tube.  Magic Ian wrote a pamphlet on this subject several years ago.
Tonight's show theme was Mentalism and our M.C. was the very amicable Lee Langer.  Tom Golabek started things off with  a Swami mind reading spoof.  Aaron Solomon performed an effect with numbered cards and predicting a number between 1 and 60.  Skip Waversak did a prediction using a word, number, geometric figure and landmark that was picked by several spectators.  Greg Solomon did an experiment using ESP cards called Triception and showed us the possibilities using a spirit hand.  Tom Golabek performing as the Great Tombino did a mentally selected number prediction on a pad of paper.  Jim Moody's effect was predicting the final coin after borrowing loose change from several club members and eliminating the coins randomly.  Bryan Weller did a lunch bag prediction using several lunch bags and several club members.  The premise was "mother's intuition".  Very well done.    Magic Ian did a card effect where the selected card ended up on his cell phone.  Very clever effect.  George Shield ended tonight's show with a marked card that was predicted by the audience.
Meeting ended at 9:30 p.m.
Wayne Hughes
Secretary Ring 258
