February Ring Meeting Minutes

Hi Magi,
Here's the latest from Ring 258!
         Roger

February, 2015 Minutes of IBM Ring 258 – The Magic Ian Ring
The Ring was notified by President Jim Moody, by e-mail prior to this month's meeting, that Denny's no longer wanted our business.  Jim explained that through member Les Morgenstein we were able to acquire the use of the Lake County Shrine Club's meeting room at no charge for this month's meeting.  We had a smaller than usual turnout and it was hoped that this new location was not the cause.  The Shriner's would like us to continue to meet there and even offered to bring in a chef to prepare a limited menu for us.  It was decided not to go the food route but to eat either before or after the meeting, at other locations and simply purchase drinks from the bar at the club and donate "a dollar or two" to the Shriner's each month.  Greg Solomon and Chuck Smith ate at the IHOP up the road a mile or two and found that they have a back room we might use for free if we dine there, if things don't work out at the Shrine Club.
The Secretary's minutes were accepted as e-mailed.  The Secretary also reported that a "Special Event" article and photos have been submitted to the Linking Ring detailing our Holiday Party, Officer Induction and Ring Name Change celebration.  The article should appear in the next few months.  The Treasurers report was accepted showing a balance of $3004.90 at the end of January, with 46 members.  Almost 1/3 of members have not paid their 2015 dues yet.  If not paid by the end of March you will be dropped from the roster.
Old Business
Greg Solomon reports Ryan Schlutz will lecture for us at 2:00 PM on Sun., Mar., 8, 2015 at Mystic Ice Cream.  On Wed., Mar. 18, Ring 170 will host Diamond Jim Tyler for a lecture.
The Ring received a very cordial letter from Floyd L. Cogley Jr., of the Lake County Shrine Club, thanking us for magic performed at the Patient Children's Christmas Party.
Our next fund raising event is scheduled for Fri., Mar. 20 at 7:00 PM.  Performers will be Roger Reid, Wayne Dowling, Roger Many, Jim Moody, Dave and Karen Lyons, George Smallwood and Greg Solomon.  Lobby magicians will be Magic Lee Langer and Dandy Dan Dyer.  Back Stage helpers so far are Bob Martino and Bob & Wendy Morris.  We can use more hands to pull curtains, set and strike acts, sell and take tickets, etc.  If you can help that day contact Jim Moody at 352-315-1100 or crowdteaser@embarqmail.com .  Jim will contact Santa to see if he is available for photography.  (No White Socks!)
New Business
Our picnic has been rebooked for Sun., June 7, 2015 at Hickory Point Park.  Our Holiday Party has been rebooked at the Shrine Club for Sun., Dec. 27, 2015.
We have another potential fund raiser show at the Shrine Club for the date Sat., Oct. 31, 2015, Halloween.  Some discussion was held over the pro's and con's of that date and what help the Shriners might give to help ticket sales.
The discussion of monthly meeting themes was brought up.  Next month will be St. Patrick's Day and anything Green.  Other topics brought up were Mini Lectures, Grab Bag, pick a theme like ropes and everyone performs with repeating anything already done, etc.  Jim will prepare themes for the rest of the year.
The Ring 170 Flea Market and Lectures will be on Sat., Mar. 28 at the Jewish Community Center in Maitland.
The Magic Roundtable Luncheon was held at "Legends: in Fruitland Park.  It may be held there again or we may try some other restaurants.
Greg brought in a 40 year old, sealed Tiffany Decanter of Liquor from the Placko Estate which he offered for sale.  There were no takers.  He will bring it to the flea market.  He also displayed an effect call "Horse Race" which had no instruction and asked for input.
The 50/50 was won by Bob Martino in the amount of $11!
Entertainment
Dave Lyons emceed the evening show with a theme of "Hearts and anything about Valentine's Day".
First up Jim Moody performed "Guess the Card", twice and then closed with "Lips".
Roger Reid misunderstood the title of the theme and thought it was f**ts and brought a Whoopie Cushion.  He also showed how a cheap magician gets bouquets of flowers, for all his female friends and relatives, without spending $39.95 for each, by using magic flower seeds and a chafing dish!
Greg Solomon managed to sneeze out a donut and then perform Bob Cassidy's "Chronologue".
Dave Lyons closed the show with a bare handed production of multicolored, Mylar flowers.
