Visiting Magicians are Always Welcome!

President Jim Moody called the meeting to order and introduced 3 visitors, Bob Drake, John Carragher, and Dan Stapleton.  Jim announced that this is National Magic Week and passed around a notice from the Lake Sentinel newspaper. He also reported that James "Amazing" Randi is alive and well, living in Fort Lauderdale, contrary to the opinion of some members at the last meeting.

Four members performed walk-around magic at the Camp Boggy Creek's "Bruce Rossmeyer Ride for the Children" fund raising event on Sun., Oct. 10th.  Magicians performing for the "bike riders" included Roger Reid, Greg Solomon, Rich Hewitt and Wayne Dowling. Ring photographer "Santa" Abernathy immortalized everyone as the Ring presented Camp Boggy Creek with our annual contribution of $500.  The overall event raised more than $200,000 in one day.

The revised Ring By-Laws, which have been worked on by the officers for some months, was discussed again and then passed by the membership.  The name "Ken Krick" was left as part of the name.

As part of the 25th anniversary celebration of Ring 258 we are planning a number of shows and events. The first event will be a fund raising show at the Congregation Sinai Temple in Mineola, FL, on Tue., Dec. 28th. Tentative performers are: Roger Reid, Dan Dyer, Magic Ian, Wally Libenson, Aaron Solomon and Jim Moody.  The show is scheduled for 7:00 PM and the tickets will be $10.00.

There being no nominations from the floor the slate of officers presented at the last meeting, was voted in for next year. The 2011 officers are: President - Jim Moody, Vice President - Wally Libenson, Secretary - Roger Reid (Again!), Treasurer - George Smallwood.

The Ring 258 Dec. Meeting and Holiday Party is scheduled for Wed., Dec. 29th at the Community Room of the Royal Highlands development on US Hwy. 27, south of Leesburg. This is the same venue as last year and the same caterer, Upper Crust. There will be a gift exchange, entertainment, games, some surprises and a whole lot of fun.

Jim Moody encouraged all to attend our Round Table discussion and lunch held at Denny's the 2nd Wed. of every month at 1:00 PM. No business is conducted, just good talk, food and fellowship.

Announcements included Warren Wooten doing a 45 minute show at the Deltona Library, Dan Dyer doing a Drug Awareness Show for a number of schools through the Life Stream Drug Awareness Program, and Jim Moody working a number of venues this month. Bill Fay talked about Wally Libenson's performance at the Seabreeze Country Club. Dan Stapleton indicated that the Daytona Magic Convention is looking for volunteers to work at the Convention. Contact Harry Allen at Daytona Magic to sign up.

Guest Magic Historian Bob Drake gave us a short history of Harry Houdini's effort to communicate with his wife after his death on Oct. 26, 1926. Every year after his passing his wife, Bess, conducted a séance to see if they could communicate with him from the "Great Beyond". After Harry failed to appear after ten tries, the annual séances were cancelled.  Bob also passed around a few photos of Houdini from his vast collection of magic effects and memorabilia.

The formal part of the evening was adjourned at 8:00PM. After a fifteen minute intermission, the sale of the Keith Doll Magic Collection and John Abernathy's Nephew's Magic Book Collection was opened for business. Activity was brisk and a number of the Association members went home with some very nice bargains. The rest of the Collection will be offered for sale during the Nov. 14th Flea Market and Auction. We closed up shop and departed for home around 9:30PM.

Many thanks, to George Smallwood, who did and excellent job on the minutes in my absence.

Roger L. Reid, Secretary (Again!), Ring 258
