May Minutes

Minutes of IBM Ring #258

Thursday, May 26, 2011

President Jim Moody opened the meeting by introducing guests Sue Harris, Jill Morganstern and youngsters Taylor and Rachel.  He then discussed the passing of compeer Jim Forsyth and the fact that only 2 members of the Ring paid their respects at the viewing.  A Broken Wand Ceremony may be conducted in August when Jim's ashes are buried with full military honors.  Mrs. Beverly Forsyth is donating all of Jim's magic to the Ring.

The Secretary's minutes were accepted as corrected by George Shield.  The Treasurer's report showed a balance of $7695.54 at the end of April with 53 paid up members.  Those not paying their overdue dues have been dropped from the roster.  New member packets were presented to Les Morganstern and Terry Harris.

     Old Business

Camp Boggy Creek – Roger Reid reported he has heard from new Entertainment Director Alicia Goodman.  She offered us a selection of 13 dates for a "teach in".  Sunday, July 10 was selected to teach a group of campers with cancer.  Those volunteering for the event, so far, are Lee Langer, Greg and Aaron Solomon, Roger Reid, Chuck Smith, and Ryan Dunn.  If you have questions about this event and/or would like to be added to the group of "magic teachers" contact Roger Reid at bonzo1114a@aol.com.

The "Round Table Luncheon" celebrated its 5th Anniversary last Wednesday.  Jim asked for any additional contributions to the Ring 25th Anniversary Celebration.

P.A. Systems – The system Chris Dunn has been looking at is packed away in the church attic.  He has to get up there to retrieve it.  Roger Reid is waiting for a price on the Bose system that is sitting on a shelf at his real estate association.  He will report back to the club at the next meeting.  Les Morganstern has offered to supply cables and microphones for either system we purchase.

Lectures – V.P. Wally Libenson has booked Chastain Criswell for a lecture on Sunday, July 24, at 6:30 PM at the Best Western Hotel in Leesburg.  For a complete introduction to Criswell go to: http://www.magicbyenigma.com/lecture.html.   Wally has also booked Jay Scott Berry to be our lecturer on Sat., Nov. 12 at our annual Fall Flea Market – Auction – Lecture.

Ring Picnic – The picnic will again take place at the home of George Smallwood on Sun., July 17.  Greg Solomon was appointed "Games Chairman".  There will be plenty of food, fun, games, magic and surprises.  You must sign up between now and our June 23rd meeting to be included at the picnic.  E-mail Jim Moody at crowdteaser@embarqmail.com to be put on the list or sign up at the next meeting.  You must put down a $5.00 deposit for each person attending.  The $5.00 deposit will be refunded to you when you arrive at the picnic.  Those who are "no shows" will not get their $5.00 back to help defray the cost of extra food ordered!

Ice Cream - Member Jeff Markow has opened an ice cream store called "Mystic" at 1217 Rt. 466A in Fruitland Park.  He has special ice cream flavors and "frozen wine desserts".  Jeff will bring samples to the picnic.  Stop by when you are in the area!

Mt. Dora Show – We have booked the Mt. Dora Civic Theatre for Sat., Oct. 29, to perform one or two shows in honor of the Rings 25th Anniversary, National Magic Week and Halloween combined.  We must do all the promotion and ticket sales ourselves.  Brian Weller is working up posters and "coupons" to use as the marketing tools which will bring in the patrons.  Cost of those materials around $400.  We will need members to walk the streets of downtown Mt. Dora to place posters and coupons in the businesses, schools, churches, etc. Brian asked everyone to give him ideas for use on both the posters and coupons.  Those willing to help with preparation and/or do the distribution legwork should contact Brian at bigtop1@att.blackberry.net.  There is a major event happening in Mt. Dora the evening before our show.  We should be distributing materials on every street corner.  We also have the option of paying $450 and having an advertising banner prepared and hung over the main street in downtown Mt. Dora for a week before our show.  Bill Fay reported that we can get a ¼ page, full color ad for $100 in the local paper.  Those wishing to work the show contact JimMoody: crowdteaser@embarqmail.com.

     New Business

Fund Raiser – Lee Langer reports Congregation Sinai has invited us back to perform on a date between Christmas and New Years.  The show will be sponsored by the Sisterhood.

Magi-Fest – Ring 175 is holding a convention on Sat., June 18 at the Holiday Inn Express in Tampa.  Just $25 for the day.  Many members went last year and were impressed with the dealers, lectures and shows.  Jim is putting together a car pool to the event.  E-mail him at crowdteaser@embarqmail.com.

Holiday Party – Will take place on Thu., Dec. 29, 2011.

Bad Publicity – Found in the "Daily Commercial" article "Magician Arrested in Child Sex Sting".

New Purchase Reviews – Chris Dunn – "Magic Mikes Golden Shells" $14, "Not worth the money.  Need to be reworked."  Greg Solomon - Sean Taylors "No Fail Kids Magic Show DVD's", "Some ideas, but not worth the retail price of $120".

Greg Solomon is placing an order with D. Robbins (EZ Magic) for his summer magic camp.  If you need anything from D. Robbins now is your chance.  Contact Greg at themagicexperience@yahoo.com.

50/50 – Was won by Anna Marie Fay in the amount of $18.  50/50 money goes toward the Holiday Party.

Meeting Entertainment – Theme – Magic with Jumbo or Giant Playing Cards, Emcee Tom Golabeck.

First up was new member Terry Harris who did a spectacular version of a torn and restored jumbo card which restored itself in an "Okito Card Frame".  Roger Reid presented a customizable 3 Card Monte with giant 18"cards and his own routine called "Laser Card", in which he used guest Rachel as an Alien shooting her laser gun through a chosen jumbo card.  Lee Langer magished "Half and Half" with the assistance of two young ladies.  Chris Dunn performed a "Split Deck" routine with Jumbo cards.  Mike Lamonica showed us "Giant B'Wave" and "ESP Prediction".   Roger Many had everyone laughing when he did "Gozinta".  Greg Simon fooled us with the "McCombical Deck".   Jim Moody offered a trio "One Card Monte", "Pop Eyed Popper" and "Long Card".  And Terry Harris returned to close the show, off theme, with "Uncle Cecil's Spirit Bell" which knocked us out!

Next Months' Theme – "Transformation" Definition: Change in form, appearance or condition.

Respectfully submitted, Roger L. Reid, Secretary, Ring 258
